Eastern NC barbecue ruled healthier than Western NC
WNCN ^ | 11/19/15 | WNCT

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) There is a new battle of BBQ and this one deals with which style is healthiest.

Insurance company Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) took a look.

A post compared the Eastern style to the Western style.

The Eastern style comes out on top when it comes to being healthier.

BCBSNC says it is because the Western take on BBQ requires a bit more attention and more flavorings meaning more fat and sodium.

It tipped the scales to the East too because the whole pig is used and not just dark meat on the pork shoulder.

BCBSNC says pick the Eastern style for your heart and cholesterol health.

There hasn't been a good BBQ fight on FR in a while.

For kicks, there's aways the BBQ Jew to read.

Eastern NC bbq is relatively healthy - for pork bbq that is. Its vinegar and pepper based, and both vinegars and hot peppers are good for you. Counter acts some of the fat in the meat (and added).

I’ll need a grant to travel the country sampling local cuisine.

Nobody cares if it is healthier. Healthy is not a criteria for buying good BBQ.

Of course the eastern is better for you. That is because the western tastes better. Good food is usually not as good for you.

Is this like saying that 9mm is less lethal than .45 ACP?

Seriously when it comes to BBQ who cares?

No worries for me, since I don’t eat that nasty NC BBQ. Only TX BBQ will do.

Don’t worry, the EPA is working hard to make sure that outdoor BBQ will be ended by their regulations. Thus this contest over which is best will be nothing but a vague memory of the past.

I am from Raleigh and no I am not middle of the road, but I do like both eastern NC and western or Lexington style versions of BBQ. Good pork is good eating.

The Skylight Inn at Ayden is the one eastern joint I will admit to jonesing for.

Their fried cornbread is outstanding.
