Apple's Tim Cook Says Mac And iPad Won't Converge

The story of computing has been one of converging more and more services into one place, as the video "Evolution of the Desk" from Harvard's School of Computing illustrates below.

With so much overlap now between things you can do on a smartphone and on a desktop computer, there's been much talk of convergence between the two. Google, for instance, is widely thought to be working on bringing its mobile platform Android together with its "browser only" operating system Chrome, which is found on its Chromebook laptops.

And with Apple's latest iPhones sporting "desktop class" processors, it’s only natural to think Cupertino might also be planning to merge its mobile and desktop platforms into one.

It's not.

"We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad," Apple CEO Tim Cook told The Irish Independent on Sunday. The efficiency of having to tote around just one device for everything is certainly attractive, but designing such a device would come with too many compromises, Cook said.

"What that would wind up doing, or what we're worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants," he added. "So we want to make the best tablet in the world, and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You'd begin to compromise in different ways."

Gives them more flexibility with both devices not to merge them.

When they do merge, it will be claimed Apple invented it.

Why would Apple want to duplicate the disaster that is the Surface? The Surface is a compromise, that does a desktop machine and a tablet machine poorly. Apple is smarter than that, allowing you access to your data everywhere despite what device you choose to use at the moment. Now that is something Microsoft missed the boat on.

LOVE the new iPad Pro, but it lacks key features the Surface has...such as a kickstand, keyboard with trackpad (when i tested the pro, it was awful to have to keep moving fingers form keyboard to screen), and a magnetic dock for the stylus. Perhaps version 2.0 will fix some of this.

Why duplicate the touch functionality of the screen on the keyboard in a metaphor? The iPad is not a pointer based system as there is no cursor like pointer on the screen to be easy to see. Your finger or the Apple Pencil take on that job. The trackpad is superfluous.

If you have a keyboard for the iPad Pro, it props the screen in the proper position just as a kickstand does. Who needs a magnetic dock for the Apple Pencil. . . especially when that is one of the things users of the Surface are complaining about. . . about how easy it is to knock it off the stylus dock.

In side-by-side speed comparisons, the iPad Pro/Apple Pencil blew the Surface/MS Stylus out of the water because the MS stylus was very laggy.

True that. The latency is remarkable on the Pro. It is a masterpiece, to be sure.

I have the surface pro 3. It’s actually pretty good. I had to get a Microsoft machine for my business. Why is it a disaster? Everyone I know who has one is happy with it. I still have my MacBook too btw.

Why is it a disaster?

Poor sales. Microsoft lost money on the Surface for the first couple years. Most machines that try to be all-in-one make compromises and sacrifice capability in each function, while dedicated machines to a function can do that well. Remember Curly in "City Slickers" telling Mitch what the secret of life is? Curly said "One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don't mean s***." I own a sports car and a truck. The sports car can't haul crap but is quick as lightning and a lot of fun whipping around curves with the wind blowing in my hair. The truck can haul just about anything I need to move no matter how bulky or heavy, and it's also fun getting it done in one trip. Now something in between won't do both very well and probably won't be much fun.

Apple decided to make machines that focused on different aspects of what people wanted to do, whether that be desk-bound, mobile, or moving around the home, and made the same data flow between them. Why haul around an all-in-one with a bunch of accessories? I like my Mac desktop, MacBook, and iPads; each has it's role in what I do.

Surface is fantastic. And the keyboard is awesome, not like iPad pro keyboard which sucks. But they will keep copying surface until they get out right I’m sure.

Surely you mean Microsoft will keep copying the iPad until they get it right (or make a profit). Microsoft lost millions on the first versions of the Surface, despite having the popular iPad to copy from.
