WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD NOVEMBER 6, 2015

Posted on 11/06/2015 5:06:11 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Anyone know- if I plant seeds from the few yellow tomatoes will I get more yellows than reds?

Were they hybrids or open-pollinated? If hybrids, it's anybody's guess, the generations won't be the same. If OP, then the seeds will match the parents. Tomatoes don't cross naturally as often as some plants, so while there may be an occasional "stray", the odds are in favor of seeds matching the mother plant.

I just re-read your post. Are these all from the same plant just at different stages of growth? If so, then no. In fact, seeds from under-ripe tomatoes probably won’t sprout at all.

The tomato plants are hybrids, most likely. The just showed up, after we bought the place. So I gather the previous owner planted the parents.

They weren’t under ripe tomatoes, just beautiful lemon-yellow tomatoes mingled with mostly red. I figured I’d get plants with mainly red tomatoes again next year from the yellow tomato seeds, but figured I’d separate them anyway.

I know the hybrids won’t reproduce well, BTW, but collecting seeds was a habit I got into from all the non-hybrid plants I had, so did it without thinking!

Thanks for the info.

Ellendra :" I don’t like how top-heavy it is, but I think I can figure out how to attach weights so it can handle my hill."

Contact a local distributor or the machine , and see what they reccomend for a "roll bar" protection .
Perhaps you can fabricate your own out of metal plumbing supplies in the hardware store at less cost.
Do you know a welding supply house - perhaps they can reccomend someone .. ?

Ellendra : .. I don’t like how top-heavy it is, but I think I can figure out how to attach weights so it can handle my hill."

The other choice for adding weight is through 'wheel weights' which are attached to the wheel hub by bolts.
If you want the weight more permanently mounted, depending on usage ,
I had my wheels on a semi-large homesteading tractor (Ford 8N) 'loaded' with calcium .

I’ve seen Bastardi mentioned many times.
Is he as accurate as most claim him to be?
If so I might follow him.
Being retired gives me much too much time to fill.

You are a good neighbor.

At least when you have the flower bed finished you will have something nice to look at and can revel in the pride of what you have created.

And many of your neighbors will tell their friends about the nice and *large* flower bed their neighbor has.

Feeding ones ego from time to time makes for a happier person.
In my life, I have done so by planting or building something small.
Usually my garden is what feeds the inner me as well as nourishing my body.

We have one grape tomato volunteer in one of the community garden plots and it has more tomoates than can be picked if you want to stand there all day picking. Actually it may be more than one plant, because it’s taken over the whole plot which is 4 x 8’. THEN we have another large cherry tomato plant/s that have gone over the top with spreading vines and tomatoes galore. I pick those two plots, a friend picks those two plats and there are still tomatoes ripened by the next morning. I’ve got 10 messes of mixed greens in the freezer. My yellow squash is producing and the cucumbers are trying to reach the sky, and the baby cukes will be ready in a few days. The English peas are looking for someplace to climb as are the beans, so we need to get out there and help them along. The okra are played out, the beets are looking great, I’m going to pick some of the leaves to mix with the greens. The garlic are growing in a keyhole garden that nothing else will grow in. The lettuce is getting ready to pick. Next fall I’ll plant about 2 or 3 weeks earlier. Everyone plans to do the same.
This is our first fall gardening and everyone is happy with their plots. One fellow has pulled all of his southern peas and I don’t know what he’ll be doing next. Actually he’s the only “real” gardener in our little gang. We do have a master gardener, that has just joined us and he’s full of information.

oldvirginian :" I’ve seen Bastardi mentioned many times.

Honestly ,.. yes !
He is a climatologist as well as a weatherman , who doesn't agree with the "poltically correct" GLow-BULL warming crap.
He used to be with accuweather.com , but they became too politically correct with 'Glow-BULL warming' , and he left.
He studies past weather patterns, going back decades, and compares them to present conditions, and explains why weather patterns occur, and their impact on weather.
The forum used to be suppied with the weatherbell.com predictions by another Freeper member , but that contact is no longer avialable to us .
I feel that he is more reliable than even the 'Farmers Almanac', and he stated that the Farmers Almanac predictions came out after his predictions were released.
Weatherbell.com is a commercial enterprize that provides predictive information for energy and electrical suppliers, farmers, and gardening and home owners, etc..
Of all the weathermen, I like him the best . If he gets the prediction wrong, he will admit it, and tell you how he got it wrong, and uses it as a learning experience.
Trying to predict the weather patterns is just like 'herding cats' ; you have no idea where you're going to end up until you get there !
He is , at least, the best predictor I've ever known, and explains how he got that prediction, and he uses several decades of climate/weather records to back him up !

Good to know a little of his background.

We used to have a meteorologist at our local TV station, many years ago.
He got his training in the military.
He would set up his own equipment and make his own forecasts.
He had a much better record than the weather men at the other stations. He often quoted or used the farmers almanac in his broadcasts.
He is long retired now and all we have are weather “readers” who just go with whatever service the station uses.

I think I might check Bastardi out and use him and the almanac to plan my garden next year.

Thank you for all the information, it is much appreciated.

We farm. But I garden in 2 plots in town. One at my father’s home & 2nd at my house. I planted both, but harvested very little at my father’s home. His cook took care of that.

Our farms are clay loam dryland farms. But I have an orchard next to my home at the farm. Some are young trees 4-5 years old. Others are 50+ years old.

Plan to pick the Hachiya Japanese Persimmons tomorrow. Bird are beginning to work on them. I’ll have to pick and wait for them to ripen, some of them I’ll dry.

We’re getting pecans now, but we had a wet year and the rats and squirrels are tough competition on the pecans this year. I’m trapping the rats, they have over run the whole area.

My garden plot in town was not that large, but it was well composted and it did wonderful. Had very large tomato cages, but they totally over ran them.

Yesterday I spent a few minutes picking spent blooms off a 6 foot tall Camellia shrub. Shook a few limbs to dislodge all the loose petals. Suddenly, out pops a Cardinal. :)

I traded some pumpkins for a bunch of Fuyu and Hachiya Persimmons as the trees I planted were shaded by the growing Redwood trees and I never got around to planting some out front.
