Google's design chief thinks Microsoft Windows 10 stinks

Google's head of design has some choice words for Windows 10.

"#Windows10 ? More like Windows 10 years ago!" tweeted Matias Duarte, Google's (GOOGL, Tech30) design chief.

Duarte is known for transforming Android's messy look into its new, highly regarded "Material Design" interface. The minimalist series of cards, pastel colors and animations has been a big hit with Android customers.

Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) was actually a pioneer of minimalist tile design with its Windows 8 operating system in 2012. Windows 10 still incorporates much of that design sensibility, but its overall interface is laid out more like Windows 7 and Windows XP. Duarte is not a big fan.

"I just setup a Surface 4 & Windows 10 - not sure why I was excited to try a new thing, it's basically XP with a flat design skin. #FutureNot," he tweeted.

People erupted in anger, as people tend to do on Twitter. Duarte responded that he actually thinks Microsoft has done some nice things recently -- namely the much-loathed Windows 8.

"Man, I struck a nerve! Overly clever tweetbait aside, I've always liked Microsoft was attempting to do with Windows 8 - change the paradigm," he said. He then further clarified that his issue with Windows 10 is function -- not form.

"I have no beef with how #Windows10 *looks*. I'm disappointed it *works* just like XP. I understand that's a feature for many. Not for me!" Duarte tweeted. He later noted that "if Android works the same way as it does today in 10 years - I'll be very very sad."

Duarte's comment should be taken with a giant grain of salt. Windows 10 is a completely different operating system than XP, even if it looks somewhat similar. The Cortana voice assistant, virtual desktops, Windows Hello face-scanning security features,

Newer is not always better.

Change for the sake of change creates more problems than it resolves.

The last 3 versions of Windows went with glitz and glitter and lost touch with the people who use Windows for productivity, not to touch tiles and see the latest cat videos on youtube.

All of the consumer anguish with Win8 went down the drain in Win10. Describing Win10 as ‘flat’ is accurate.

Without the classic theme, Win10 it junky. They apparently took the classic theme out in one of the betas a couple of years ago and never put it back. That is another example of MS being out of touch with users who want software for productivity.

Thanks for the ping. Actually I saw this Google guy's Twitter critique in a couple of places today, and I read what he tweeted, and I decided against posting a thread on it, because at the end of the day it's just Twit clickbait. Somebody at Google ragging on Windows 10 on Twitter. Yawn.

Now, Lord knows, I've ragged on Windows 10 plenty; frankly I like Win7 a lot better. MHO.

But Matias Duarte is just throwing dull darts, and they're not even very accurate. "Win 10 works like XP" -- whut?

Never mind that Twitter is the world's most inane way to communicate anything. Let him do an actual essay or interview, where he expresses his opinions with words of more than two syllables, and isn't constantly playing to the Twits in the peanut gallery, and I'll take another look for the Ping List.

Besides, I pinged the list like four times today on topics of much higher interest to Windows folks than the Twit opinion of a competitor. And a few of them were your threads, thank you! :-)

He sounds like a drama queen really!

did he design the Google plus or new Google one email GUI? Both are stinkers.

And the sky is blue... why would Google say anything good about a competitor ?

I am glad the gates is no longer running MS he was at best middling good at it (but good at hiring and well stealling ideas early on.. ask Seattle computer!)

Does his hospital know he chewed through his restraints and escaped?

The worst thing an operating system's FYI can do is get in my way. Windows 8.1does that and 8.0 was worse.

I’m with you. It’s like every other version of IE takes the Favorites List from the right to the left of the screen and back again.

Reminds me of Dr. McCoy in the first Star Trek movie, “I know engineers, they love to change things!”

I didn't read the article. . . but I saw it and pinged you for your decision because it was posted. I don't ping the Apple list to every Apple article for the same reason you listed.

There's been a lot of Apple news today on several fronts. . . court issues, privacy, etc.

Definitely - the ‘I struck a nerve’ posts are simply more ‘look at me.’

Why is a Google staffer off the Chrome OS ranch or whatever they’re using in house?

PS - I’m sick of pastel colors regardless of publisher. It all looks like canteloupe. And I hate canteloupe.
