Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated (or just plain unrated) rock guitarists extant.
Brilliant work.
always loved that song.
funny writing about a band that doesn’t play rock (the sultans).
there’s rhythm guitar, some kind of wind instrument, bass, drums
There. that’s all i could remember from lyrics :)
Agree! Their Sultans of Swing performance off the 1984 Alchemy Live Concert album, IMHO, is hands-down one of the best rock performances in history. Can’t ever get enough of watching time and again on youtube.
I've been aware of the poets and commentators within the music world since around the time of Sgt Peppers'
I just never focused on SOME music over another
Thanx for the post
“Telegraph Road” - live from the “Alchemy” tour is beyond amazing.
One of the greatest quitar players and song writers of my generation. He is a great example of determination and hard work. I have read about him practicing day after day, year after year, four or more hours until his fingers were bleeding to develop his finger plucking technique. Think about how hard it is to use three fingers and no picks to get those sounds.
I have tickets to see him this Wednesday in Melbourne Florida at the King Center for preforming arts.
Looking very much forward to it.
Saw them live on their first US tour , on Long Island . My band in Tokyo ( 1986-1995 ) did a pretty decent cover of this cong .
Saw Mark Knopfler here in the Twilight Zone years ago, that show was among the best I have ever seen...
Chet Atkins a HUGE influence on Knopfler .
I also like his guitar work immensely, but I also love his songwriting.
He had a song, a duet with Van Morrison, on his “Sailing to Philadelphia” solo album that I found especially poignant during the 2000 Florida recount fiasco. It has a very simple melody, but the words are ones of triumph against adversity. It’s called “The Last Laugh.” If you haven’t already heard it, check it out.
Pick Withers - the drummer - was quite underrated . Last I heard he was running a pub .
Saw him last night in Atlanta, just an amazing guitarist, but the band was equally amazing. and Yes he did play SS :)
Also, look on YouTube for an iConcerts video related to the 2009 Prince's Trust, held at the Hurlingham Club. Outstanding sound and video quality.
Without a doubt, my favorite was “Your Latest Trick”
I first saw him 2 years ago at the Pearl in Vegas. Great show but it was only his solo stuff. This was mixed. He did So Far Away and SS and a couple other classics but sadly not TR :(
Knopfler is a far better guitarist than Clapton. IMO. I’ve got Sultans + a bunch of his CDs in my collection.
Sailing to Philadelphia is a theme album, based on Mason and Dixon’s mapping of the US. It’s Knopfler’s tribute to his adopted country.
Thanks for posting this FRiend!
Band I’m in plays Sultans now, I’ve been playing it for...ok since as soon as I could manage to learn all that fingerpicking...I already knew how to finger pick, been doing that since years earlier. Joe Walsh tunes, Stairway to Heaven, a bunch of others. Just took a lot of practice to get his style down. (I’ve learned loads of songs note for note. Still doing it. Sultans was one of the toughest.)
I started working on it soon as I heard it on the radio mid 70’s. took a couple of months to get it almost note for note. It has one section toward the last part of the 2nd lead I can’t do, tendon on left ring finger cut in half when I was 12, don’t have full use of that finger anymore, never did. Had to learn guitar again, modify a few chords, leads are limited sometimes. Except for that short section, I get it note for note almost every time. Been playing it since it was still on the charts.,..
I think that album and “On Every Street” are the only 2 I have, several good tunes on “every street” too. Calling Elvis, The Bug, Heavy Fuel, another I can’t remember.
I liked the entire 1st album, not a bad cut on it. Wild West End and 6 Blade Knife were just as good as Sultans I thought.
