Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated (or just plain unrated) rock guitarists extant.

Brilliant work.

always loved that song.

funny writing about a band that doesn’t play rock (the sultans).

there’s rhythm guitar, some kind of wind instrument, bass, drums

There. that’s all i could remember from lyrics :)

Agree! Their Sultans of Swing performance off the 1984 Alchemy Live Concert album, IMHO, is hands-down one of the best rock performances in history. Can’t ever get enough of watching time and again on youtube.

One of the greatest quitar players and song writers of my generation. He is a great example of determination and hard work. I have read about him practicing day after day, year after year, four or more hours until his fingers were bleeding to develop his finger plucking technique. Think about how hard it is to use three fingers and no picks to get those sounds.

I have tickets to see him this Wednesday in Melbourne Florida at the King Center for preforming arts.
Looking very much forward to it.

I also like his guitar work immensely, but I also love his songwriting.
He had a song, a duet with Van Morrison, on his “Sailing to Philadelphia” solo album that I found especially poignant during the 2000 Florida recount fiasco. It has a very simple melody, but the words are ones of triumph against adversity. It’s called “The Last Laugh.” If you haven’t already heard it, check it out.
