The discovery is only the most recent example of violence among prehistoric hunter-gatherers in the region, anthropologists say.

Boy, there's a shock.

Really interesting - thanks for posting.

I was completely unfamiliar with the pre-contact history of California.

The information about five major mitochondrial DNA lines among Native Americans is also completely new for me.

This event could easily have happened in modern California with more up-to-date weapons. I think mankind is hardwired for war. If people would accept that notion and embrace it they could learn how to manage it on a national scale. Native Americans and many other cultures developed ritual warfare. One form involves combat between two individuals from warring tribes. This avoided mass casualties which could endanger the collective gene pool.

” the men were far from home when they were killed, up to several days’ journey from where they were born and raised.”

This illustrates why men don’t ask for directions when travelling. It marks you as an “outsider”; and it’s not good to be an outsider in a bad neighbourhood.

Work like this helps maintain my faith in real science. Selective tree-ring analysis to support a political agenda represents science gone wrong. The study reported here shows what can happen when intelligent people apply scientific tools and methods to real data.

And no mention of “climate change”.

“The discovery is only the most recent example of violence among prehistoric hunter-gatherers in the region, anthropologists say. But it bears important lessons about the nature of conflict and warfare in pre-contact California.”

...but I just thought they smoked peace pipes and hummed at Mt. Shasta during the Harmonic Convergence. Am I misinformed?

I am sure their pre-historic Democrat equivalent wanted to impose obsidian-control!

I was curious as to where the locals got the obsidian.

A map showing areas where obsidian can be found and an article about obsidian collecting in the field.

Geological Outings Around the Bay: Napa Glass Mountain

I'm assuming the locals must have traveled or traded with folks from the Napa area, (that would have been closest to the Bay Area.)

I would guess it is here

The circumstances of death invite speculation that it was a woman-raiding party that at some point went very badly for the raiders. They did not have livestock yet. So maybe it was just a bunch of horny single guys from a village in the central valley who decided to find some women from a more populated area in the coast, only this time, the coast village they chose to raid from was ready for them and decided not to let them off with just a slap on the wrist.
