Why was it OK to have Super Bowl I, V, X, but not L?

Thanks. That is a nice look. Rule with Roman Numerals is the fewest symbols to express a number.

I watched the First Super Bowl on TV. It was really hyped but there were lots of empty seats. I have no idea why.

I still remember Max McGee making several catches. Bart Starr was MVP.

Why not Super Bowl (.5 * X)

Because that would make it Super Bowl V and they already did that one 45 years ago.

Super Bowl L would mean "Super Bowl Large." We have already had Super Bowl Extra Large. Super Bowl Medium is hundreds of years in the future. There will never be a Super Bowl Small.

Instead of using Arabic numerals to replace the Roman numeral, they could have used the Greek numeral. That would be "nu" for 50, Super Bowl N.

I think despite the hype the public still saw it as an exhibition game between the NFL champions and some upstarts.

KC had a defensive back who was nicknamed “The Hammer” because he would hit the receivers with his forearm. He made quite a deal about how he was gonna hit the Green Bay players with his “Hamma Blow”.

Donny Anderson ran over him and knocked him cold. All the GB players were laughing while they carted him off the field.

Whatever the case, the NFL seems to be counting their history from the start of the Super Bowl era, with this golden celebration.

That’s my recollection too. The NFL and AFL were not considered to be on the same level by people at that time.

And when the Packers beat the Chiefs in that first Super Bowl, 35 to 10, it just confirmed for many people that the AFL had some catching up to do.
