Why was it OK to have Super Bowl I, V, X, but not L?

Because a lot of people don’t know that L=50 in Roman Numerals, and because it doesn’t look right to many.

Because the graphic arts department said L is a big PITA and they couldn’t do anything cool with it. We’re back to Roman for LI, which is apparently nicely balanced and easy to work with.

Use of the Arabic numeral[edit]

The NFL announced on June 4, 2014, that the game would be marketed with the Arabic numeral “50” instead of the Roman numeral “L.” Roman numerals have been used by the league since Super Bowl V in 1971.[27][28] The use of Roman numerals will resume with Super Bowl LI, which will take place at NRG Stadium in Houston in February 2017.[2][3][27][28] According to Jaime Weston, the league’s vice president of brand and creative, one primary reason for the change was difficulty designing a suitable logo for the game. Despite the league standardizing the Super Bowl logos beginning with Super Bowl XLV so that all would follow the same template, the graphic designers determined that using the template with only the letter “L” would not have been aesthetically pleasing enough.[2] The logo will also differ in that the Arabic numeral “50” will be in large gold numerals behind the logo, with 5 and 0 each on opposite sides of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, instead of underneath and in silver as in the standard logo.[2] The regional logo includes “Levi’s Stadium” and features San Francisco landmarks.[27]

Possibly because a large plurality of NFL players cannot multiply.

Ask a silly question...

Can’t wait to find out who’s going to play New England in Super Bowl 50.

And why is the NFL saying this is their “golden season”? Why is the 50 yard line number gold in every stadium? I understand it’s the golden anniversary of the Super Bowl, but it is not the golden anniversary of the NFL. The NFL started in 1920. Are they ignoring NFL history prior to 1966? What gives?

Besides if the Lions are in Ad Bowl L, it would look like the league is biased.

Since this is a very unique celebration, The NFL chose to use the number 50 instead of the Roman numeral L for aesthetic reasons. And it logo does look pretty good, too.

I agree with your position. I presume there’s been a LOT of educational regression in the forty years since Super Bowl X.

Not only that, imagine “SUPER BOWL L” written in cursive.

Many in the later generation would think it’s a foreign language.

Alright.
But I suspect they were afraid millennials would call it “Super Bowl ‘Like’”.
