I would look closely at the EPA’s standards for diesels before using the word scandal.

There probably aren’t two honest persons on that lying agency, and the science IQ of the place wouldn’t merit a high school degree.

The EPA respect is right down there with Dorkbama the Muslim, congress, and your loca. Septic tank.

Principal funding for the ICCT comes from the ClimateWorks Foundation, with additional generous support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Energy Foundation, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

I have it on authority I trust that the emissions standards for diesel cars are ridiculous and nearly impossible without retooling everything and jacking up the prices. VW is not in business for selling high-priced cars.

They are likely not the only company doing this... just the one who got caught. It’s likely political.

Conspiracy theory 1: The government in collusion with the UAW took down a major competitor.

Conspiracy theory 2: The Obama Administration is continuing on its assault on the West in striking at the heart of the German economy... the linchpin of the European Union.

“But, but it’s plugged into a wall and doesn’t use gas so how can it pollute? Answer that smarty pants!”

I actually had a lib say that to me when I questioned them about electric cars and pollution.

Yeah, well, German Chocolate Cake has the same problem. “German” was the last name of a mid-19th century employee of a American baking products company that developed a chocolate, and a century later, a housewife created the cake using that chocolate.

Conspiracy theory 3: VW didn't spend enough on lobbying firms full of former politicians, and campaign donations.

Remember how Janet el Reno went after Microsoft because of the lack of corporate income that didn't find its way to the political class at the time?

I'm not convinced this man has done any valuable service for mankind or the environment.

One cannot sxmell or see anything from the tail pipe of the new VW Diesels.

When will they make CO and CO2 illegal?

And these cars' emissions were so dirty over millions of miles that nobody even noticed. Seems like the dirty mode is a new real world emissions standard to me.

This is a vendetta against a non-union shop in Tennessee and diesels.

It's fraud by a fascist entity and need not be defended.

I suspect that the EPA would like to rid the world of diesel cars, just like they are regulating the coal fired power plants out of exsistence. All they need to do is keep tightening the standards to the point that it no longer makes practical sense to make them. Power and gas mileage really seem to suffer with all the emission restrictions, which is exactly why you want to buy a diesel in the first place.

I’ll be turning on every light in the house on ‘Earth Day.’ My fireplace will never have a catalytic converter. And I am going to do some extra idling in my TDI just to stick it to the green Mafia.

The TDI VWs have an exhaust system that looks like a miniature chemical processing plant.

VW made all of the emissions technology work at rest and only when tested, turning off the emissions technology at speed.

Other car manufacturers have built-in much more expensive pollution controls to make the car compliant at all times, as required by law. This very concern has kept Mazda's record-setting diesel from the US (it almost passes California standards, but can't without higher cetane fuel (the US doesn't have that commonly available) or with another $1,000-$2,000 in pollution mitigation per car.

In short, VW got all the sales benefits with none of the costs.

Congratulations, you’ve destroyed a company, probably made thousands lose their jobs, brought your 15 minutes of fame.

Was what he reported false? No - VW has admitted it. He's not responsible for the consequences, VW's management is. If he sits on the results, he's just as complicit in the fraud as VW's management. The fact that he's probably a liberal, environmental wacko is irrelevant.

VW did wrong but don’t deserve to be destroyed for bringing the public good, economical cars.

This is the judgement of the securities market - who's to say it is wrong? Perhaps, it over-reacted but it wasn't an unjust administrative fine (those are coming in all likelihood).

This is a vendetta against a non-union shop in Tennessee and diesels.

Perhaps but I doubt it. Far more likely, a corporation which tried to skirt around regulations and got caught. IMO, I don't think it is the last. I personally suspect that this is going on with diesel pickup truck engines, too.
