GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI — A 46-year-old man was injured in what the Michigan Department of Natural Resources suspects was a black bear attack.

...

a black bear came from behind, knocked him over and attacked him.

"Using his hunting knife, the man stabbed the bear, which scared it off. The bear is thought to be injured," the DNR said in a news release. "The DNR was informed about 45 minutes later."

Sgt. Jon Wood spoke with the hunter and advised him to seek medical attention. The DNR's Law Enforcement Division is continuing to investigate the incident.

The DNR plans to place a bear trap in the area and is asking the public to be mindful of efforts to capture the bear.

Ya think? I mean, REALLY, being stabbed causes injuries?

There are guys I know around me, west of Grand Rapids, that have some pics of partial big cats. My advice to anyone jogging, hiking or hunting is to add a carry gun.

DNR tips for being in areas where bears may be:

You forgot to mention:

1. Always wear running shoes when hiking

2. Never hike alone

3. Always make sure you can out run the person you're hiking with....

• Carry pepper spray, which has been shown to be effective in fending off bear attacks.

I sleep during the day. 20 years of night shift. I found it as fast as I could.

Not sure how many around here these days even know the Story of The Legend of Kanawa.

Good advice for more than fighting bears

Practice is good in a broad range of situations. I saw no reason to speculate on what those might be.

I was in bar many years ago and they had one of those wrestling bears, a black bear...I forgot what the challenge was...something like stand up for 5 minutes against the bear something like that. The bear was muzzled and presumably declawed. A big dude went against the bear. No contest. The bear was barely budged. The guy was getting the crap beat out of him just on the muscle power of the bear itself. It was like a 3 year old trying to beat up a full grown adult...literally.

Ditto. I walked into a bar deep in the UP bush. The bar had a stuffed bear sitting on a barstool. I bet the bartender I could wrestle the bear to the floor in five seconds. The bartender said, Go try. I lost.

Long story short, they had the bear tied to the barstool with the barstool bolted to the floor. Moral of the story - always bring an adjustable wrench or socket set to a bear in a bar wrestling match.
