It is Labor Day Weekend, the last gasp for some before the soup/stew/casserole season comes.
So, I am interested in knowing how many of you are going to, or already have, enjoyed a 'good hot dog', made the way that 'is the norm' in your region, (and believe I know there are particulars, as per region)? Or have you just 'winged it', and created a new way to enjoy your hot dog?
Whether it is grilled, boiled, fried, or steamed, with a flat-cut bun, or a New England style bun, or even just plain slices of white bread, with anything or not, please tell me.
Here is a hint: All those years in Thailand, when I was working within the supply yard, and not my secondary function, my lunch pleasure was always a walk over to the base exchange/post office, to get a small carton of chocolate milk from the B.X., and then a nice, large hot dog with toppings off the cart outside, and return to work with hot dog in one hand, and milk carton in the other.
dear mass,
To quote one of my favorite chefs ... “It’s, Oh so good!”
Yes MUSTARD.
Frenches Yellow is pretty traditional but i Love the brown stuff.
Guldens is a decent store brand but there is much better out there, Lately i’ve been using Boars Head brand brown mustard.
yummmmmy....
There is much better out there i am sure it’s a problem of buying and trying that i don’t like.
Hey maybe i should open a mustard shop?
Nathan’s has a nice garlicky taste. Best eaten on a sun-burned day at Coney Island!
dear sax,
I wish you well growing them, but, um, you may keep my portion of them, thank you.
dear doodle,
Where is the jah-lah-peh-no pepper that goes on the ‘regulation Chicago Dog’?
dear virgil,
Might i suggest a piece of Andouille sausage?
dear final,
I am amazed. Tor-tillahs???? I agree, it is an unleavened bread. Yet, um, that might be a bridge over Madison County that i have yet to cross.
The ones I know are “Glazier” or “Glasier” Been a while since I lived there. They are a regional thing as far as I remember. If they still exist and you are ever there, there is nothing that good in hot dog land. Anywhere. If their was a lobster hot dog or a Waygu beef hot dog, maybe. But kidding aside, they are just awesome. Boiled, BBQ or on a stick.
Just had one at my local hot dog establishment. Delicious.
Anything else is not a hot dog.
Period.

Yep...ketchup and mustard on dogs. I put ketchup, mustard and mayo on burgers too, along with bacon, onion, dill pickles, lettuce and tomato. I buy pre-made swiss and mushroom burgers from the meat counter at Price Chopper, and fry them using Montreal Steak seasoning on both sides. Yum yum!
Chili slaw dog with mustard then slaw then chili and onions on top. At the Varsity. What’ll ya have, what’ll ya have?
Nowhere. A real Chicago dog can have sport peppers as an option, but not jalapeno. Those would be too hot and would ruin the flavor of the dog.
Baguette bread is yummy! I never heard of it before but it sounds like a great idea. I’ll have to try it sometime.
There is ketchup on that hot dog. Barbarian.
Racing stripes.
Yummy New England hot dog rolls....buttered and toasted sides......hold your grilled hot dog.
Also used for their famous lobster rolls.....worth the trip to Maine.
Hamburgers served on toasted buttered white bread...also good.
