Report: Half of schools cut cafeteria staff as kids abandon Obama menus

President and first lady Michelle Obama's bid to cut kid obesity through new demands for more costly but healthier food is financially crushing the nation's school cafeterias, forcing staff cuts, boosting waste and killing plans to buy new equipment, according to an industry association.

A new survey from the School Nutrition Association reported that 70 percent of the nation's lunch programs have been financially "harmed" by the new low-salt, low-sugar menus and that a stunning 93 percent report fewer students buying the chow.

"Meeting these mandates has harmed the financial health of nearly 70 percent of school meal programs surveyed, with fewer than 3 percent reporting a financial benefit," said the survey. Some 49 percent of the responding schools said they were forced to cut cafeteria staff as a result.

The financial threat to school food programs has become so grave that the association is calling on Congress to provide more money. The association said that schools are being ordered by the Agriculture Department to absorb another $1.2 billion in added costs resulting from having to buy more expensive — and less attractive — foods to meet the federal regulations.

I always get irritated at the public service ads on the radio claiming that 1 out of every 5 children in America goes hungry. I don't believe it.

I do as well...

20 % of the children in this country go hungry...right ?

That needs to be defined, one meal, not enough cheetos, ran out of Mountain Dew ?

I know lots of kids go hungry because of their moronic alcoholic, drug addled, irresponsible parents...who spend their money on their "issues"

Food is available to people in a myriad of multiple layered safety nets from the local church to the federal government programs...

I think it's darn near impossible for any children to go hungry in this country, there are tons of food resources are available if utilized...

PSA's are another story in themselves.

They are aimed at the lowest common denominator of the country; the clueless low-info voter.

Unfortunately, they are mandated to air on AM-FM radio stations.

When I'm listening to talk radio and a PSA comes on, I cringe and try to tune them out.

The school lunch program has long been a key to federal control of schools. To get that money, schools must obey hundreds of federal regulations, or they will be threatened with the loss of funding.

So, oddly enough, though many children will suffer due to Michelle Obama’s imperious arrogance, the end result may be the collapse of this socialist system, and its replacement with a state funded, far more rational alternative. Or, as a minimum, just a block grant from the feds, but with no strings attached.

And freed from the expensive and onerous bonds of all these piggybacked regulations, schools will have far more resources to devote to education.

More children than ever are being put on free lunches and meals in the school system, but the majority are not eating them and they have the nerve to ask for more money?

I remember there was an expedition to the North Pole where one expedition member was a huge man who was brought along for his strength.

As the expedition proceeded he began to complain that he wasn’t getting enough food. (Everyone got the same portions.)

The expedition leader said he was a whiner and a weakling.

He was the first to die along the way during the failed expedition.

They lay off employees and delay equipment purchases so they need more money. That’s the gov’t for you.

You can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs!

A lot of broken eggs there, and still no omelet worth a bite.

Time to get a new chef.

The food and the portions mandated for school children should be the same as the food and portions mandated for EBT card purchases.

The kids refuse to eat their free breakfast and lunch because their momma can take them to Baskin Robbins or McDonalds on her EBT card.

Why are we feeding kids at school? Why are schools doing anything besides teaching kids?

If kids want food at school then the schools should contract out to companies like McDonald's to provide food to those kids that pay.

I thought most of the poor kids were in families that got Food Stamps. If they get Food Stamps, then their "loving" parents should use them to buy food to make lunches for their little darlings.

Our lunches used to be so good!
My mom always made our lunch, brown bag style but when the calendar showed something that we liked..pizza, hot turkey etc..we could pick one day a week to eat at school.
My friend, who teaches 4th grade, said during lunch the Mexican family moms bring all their little ones to share the older kids lunch.
Wonder if they throw away the food too?
Of course, it’s free for them so they don’t care..we pay!!
The school districts should’ve told The Wookie to shove it!

Obviously the large, strong man who was starving to death due to inadequate caloric intake. Not all readers need every little detail explained to them. Most people are able to infer conclusions from the information presented in previous sentences.

It’s called a logical interpretation of facts already in evidence. That’s something I learned between grades 4 and 6.

It was ambiguously worded. It could have gone either way. The irony could have been that the leader said the strong guy was a whiner but then the leader was the first to go. Irony is something I learned in school, too.

Are you always a jerk or just anonymously behind a keyboard?

I poked your pedantry with a pointed snark-stick. You responded in kind.

(Yes, my instructors also told me to Always Avoid Alliteration, but it can be fun.)

Good day.

As I recall, most of the cafeteria workers were cheering on Mooshell’s program when it began. Glad kids are bringing their own lunches. It’s cheaper and better.
