As Lauren Mishkind was walking along 7th Street this summer in downtown Los Angeles, a man pulled a handgun and pointed it at another person standing behind her.
Terrified, she hid behind a car while the assailant tackled the victim.
"I was just shaking for the rest of the day," said Mishkind, who lives downtown and works at an architectural firm in the area. "You kind of assume it's par for the course living down here, which is kind of more shocking."
Crime has jumped across the city this year, but nowhere has the increase been as large as in L.A.'s hippest new domain: downtown.
Here, the forces of rapid gentrification are crashing up against the chronic poverty, homelessness and crime that have long been a part of life in the city center. Police and residents say the influx of new lofts, luxury high-rise apartments, bars and eateries have made these new downtown dwellers easy targets for street crime.
"Those two communities are rubbing up against each other and for some reason it has gotten more aggressive," Mishkind said. "We understand there is a grittiness downtown, but that aggression against other people is not acceptable."

Central Division Capt. Michael Oreb also pointed to Proposition 47, the state ballot measure passed last year that downgraded drug possession and minor thefts to misdemeanors, and thus put more offenders who had been in jail on the streets. Police across the state said they've seen a rise in property crime since the measure took effect.

Gentrification in a sanctuary city, what could possibly go wrong?
I remember a number of years ago Hartford CT encouraged the gentrification of an area around Pope Park. Tough neighborhoods. Some people put their money down, they the city did not protect and people lost their shirts.

For those outside of California, Prop. 47 changed the law so that if a gun is stolen and it is worth less than $950 it is considered a misdemeanor.
So much for tough gun control.

are you nuts? There is a reason why everyone SCRAMS from 5th to 9th st. in DTLA. It’s called Skid Row and anyone can just pop a tent in front of just-closed stores. Another idiot liberal.
But then that was near the Music Center, and there's nothing that keeps crime down like the fear of accidentally listening to classical music!
Most of the increase seems to be near the sports/entertainment complexes down south, and the commuter "friendly" areas near the metro ... which is conveniently located next to skid row.
Those who commit small crimes also commit more serious crimes, Who would have thunk it.
Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown......
They wanted the city life, now they are GETTING the city life.
It’s time for them to GROW UP, learn how to drive a car, and move to the suburbs, like the rest of adult society.
If they voted for death via free criminals, I don’t have to worry about what happens in LA as long as they keep it in Mexifornia.
