Fifty years after Giants' Juan Marichal hit Dodgers' John Roseboro with a bat, all is forgiven
LA Times ^ | August 22, 2015 | Bill Plaschke

Posted on 08/25/2015 8:58:34 PM PDT by Michael.SF.

It was a brawl that forever defined one of sports' fiercest rivalries, with an ugliness that offered a new and frightening definition of sports violence.

Yet, 50 years later, the most enduring memory of baseball's most famous fight is that it did not define the men.

Monday marks the 13th anniversary of a far more powerful moment, one occurring at Roseboro's funeral, when, in a hall filled with old Dodgers, an old Giant suddenly walked to the lectern.

It was Marichal, who wanted to say goodbye, and thank you.

Excellent piece by Bill Plashke. I guess if Roseboro can forgive Marichal, maybe it is time I did as well.

Marichal was a great pitcher, but also a hot head! Back when I was a Dodger fan with Koufax and Drysdale!

He should have been thrown out for the rest of the season.

Me too, I watched that game on TV, always hated Marichal with that high kick and arrogant attitude.

Perhaps I had forgotten, but not being voted into the HOF on his first two years of eligibility really drove the point home to Mr. Marichal.

Sandy Koufax was the best pitcher ever, including my home state pitcher Nolan Ryan!

“Koufax is also remembered as one of the outstanding Jewish athletes in American sports. His decision not to pitch Game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur garnered national attention as an example of conflict between professional pressures and personal beliefs.”

Absolutely all-time greatest pitcher in baseball. And a man of character and integrity.

“I remember seeing that on TV...”

So did I, one of ten games shown on local TV that year (nine in SF, one in Houston for the Astrodome).

Me too. I saw both of them pitch and they were great. I also thought Frank Howard was fantastic to watch hit.

Marichal, McCovey, and Mays were all great players, but to this day I still do not like the Giants. Their fans still love Barry Bonds and I can’t stand him.

That’s Nolan Ryan beating the crap out of Robin Ventura in August of 1993. Ventura was a hothead and rushed the mound. Ryan was a (real) rancher in the offseason punching cattle:

“Back when I was a Dodger fan with Koufax “

Koufax was the other pitcher. Marichal was at bat. Koufax rushed in to help.

Favorite story from those days: Koufax pitches a no hitter in Philly. Drysdale takes early train to NYC where he is pitching the next day. He gets off the train:

Reporter: Don! Did you hear? Koufax pitched a no hitter!

Big D (deadpans): Did he win?

(Dodger fans will appreciate the humor)
