“The last IndyCar driver to die because of an on-track incident was Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon, who was killed in the 2011 season finale at Las Vegas after his head hit a post when his car went airborne.
“
The LESSON from this is that it is safer doing 200mph on the race track than it is doing 35mph down your street.

So sorry to hear this sad news.

Very sad. He was a good driver respected by his peers and loved by racing fans. He will be missed.

Good of example of why you never want to assume you can make things right tomorrow - with friends, with family, with God, whomever.

Seemed to be the nicest, most personable of all the drivers.
A fan favorite. RIP Justin.

What a terrible, fluke-y tragedy. Reminiscent of Tom Pryce at the 1977 (?) South African Grand Prix.

This is so sad.
I am a huge fan of the league and he was a solid individual.

Oh, damn. So sad. Yes, Wilson was my favorite driver and pretty much the classiest driver in the league, but the main thing is, he had a wife and family, and they have lost him. He was doing great with Andretti the last few races and was set to sign with them for next season.
They are going to have to come up with some sort of clear shroud that would sit in front of and protect the driver’s head, or I think I am going to look at other types of racing, such as sports cars or NASCAR.
