What a terrible, fluke-y tragedy. Reminiscent of Tom Pryce... Now that you mention it, there is a very familiar feel to these events. Both tragically killed as the result of other relatively minor wrecks.

Oh, damn. So sad. Yes, Wilson was my favorite driver and pretty much the classiest driver in the league, but the main thing is, he had a wife and family, and they have lost him. He was doing great with Andretti the last few races and was set to sign with them for next season.
They are going to have to come up with some sort of clear shroud that would sit in front of and protect the driver’s head, or I think I am going to look at other types of racing, such as sports cars or NASCAR.

Purists will scream but it is time to do away with open cockpits.

no... for multiple reasons, least of which is being trapped in the car
if they feel it's too dangerous, there's always NASCAR

The consensus was that it was about 10 pounds with a closing speed of 180 mph. Lots of kinetic energy.
Wilson is also the tallest guy in the series (6-3) so he sits up pretty high compared to some of the smaller drivers, potentially more exposed.

Maybe they just need a front windscreen type bubble with the top open - sort of like some old aircraft? If they can get the optics right.

One of those improbable but devastating hits.
Hinchcliffe got knocked out at Indy last year with a much smaller piece of shrapnel.
