Humans are ‘unique super-predator’
BBC News ^ | 08/20/2015 | Jonathan Amos

Humans’ status as a unique super-predator is laid bare in a new study published in Science magazine.

The analysis of global data details the ruthlessness of our hunting practices and the impacts we have on prey. It shows how humans typically take out adult fish populations at 14 times the rate that marine animals do themselves. And on land, we kill top carnivores, such as bears, wolves and lions, at nine times their own self-predation rate.

But perhaps the most striking observation, say authors Chris Darimont and colleagues, is the way human beings focus so heavily on taking down adult prey. This is quite different from the rest of the animal kingdom, for which the juveniles of a species tend to be the most exploited. […]

This concentration on large adult prey is triggering extinctions, as well as driving an evolutionary shift towards smaller fish sizes and disrupting global food chains, say the authors. …

Repeating the same idiocy from eight years ago. Pseudoscientists have gotten in the way of real science.

And I say that we are God’s supreme creation and He is the one that determines what survives and what doesn’t. Not mortal humans. Since the creation of the world there have been countless species that have come and gone without human intervention. So this piece is just nonsense. Amen.

You mean that *gasp* humans are alpha predators with our giant brains, opposable thumbs, and tool-using skills??

It took “scientists” to figure this out?

Its on the first page of the bible.

If we bump off all the lefties, it would decrease the surplus human population.

Just a thought.

Scientists seem to be stuck on stupid these days.....more politically correct and emotionally immature vs. cold, hard, logical, analytical, results oriented types. Sad.

Oh really, humans don’t take out juvies the way animals do? What animal specie can match our abortion rates!!!!! And we don’t even have to hunt them down. Human mothers volunteer them.

Humans’ status as a unique...

I would say being made in God’s image is pretty unique. :-)

We are the only biological machine on the planet that has a soul for which Christ died. Animals, trees, the planet, etc. are all in a completely separate category: Natural resource, and under man’s domain as ordained by God.

It’s funny, because humans in their natural state don’t look anything like impressive predators. We’ve got no claws, no fangs, no night vision, no sense of smell for tracking prey, we are not fast enough to outrun anything, and we aren’t strong for our size either.

However, when you throw our brains into the equation, none of that matters. The human brain is such a deadly weapon, it completely makes up for the fact that we are defenseless, squishy pink bags of meat and puts us on top of the food chain :)

Since "big fish eat little fish", doesn't this save the lives of gazillions of little fish?

We prey on our own children and celebrate it (i.e. Planned Parenthood)

That is SO well said!!

In both commercial and sport fishing the government mandates that we throw the little ones back. It’s not really a natural human preference.

Remember, with the scientists, it’s “brain size relative to body size” that determines if any flesh being is sapient. No spiritual aspect whatsoever, according to them.

And I don’t see grizzly bears going after salmon roe either—only the adult salmon.

It’s not the brain either. Saying it’s the brain hands the argument to the atheists, who ignore anything spiritual.
