We’ve got a really bright, full one near Buffalo, but not blue... I would love to see one! This July 4 th, we had a large, orange-red, low-hanging moon... I stopped on the way home from a friend’s, saw it, and took a picture. Stuff like that is so cool!

My Starry Night software gives it a magnitude ( tonight ) of -12.82, and the Wiki article on
Apparent magnitude gives the maximum brightness of the full moon as -12.92, with an average of -12.74, so it's on the bright side according to these sources.

A forest fire covering almost 1,000 acres just east of Glide, OR. I just hope it’s not the first of many. Beautiful country which is very dry with the hot weather and all the human caused fires we are getting here and in California.

You’re seeing it! The “blue moon” means IIRC, the second full moon in the same month. Fairly rare.
I was reading the thread with the newspapers of WWII+70 years on FR, and they said bombing of Toyko was done under a bright moon. I had to check - it wasn’t a blue moon.

Only a few more days and we will be reading about the A-bombs. After reading day after day of all the new towns being bombed, with an average of 50% of each city and town destroyed, the A-bombs will practically seem merciful to me and get them to end the war.

In all seriousness, though, if it’s just a night light, it probably has an earthly explanation.

The Moon is 3 days before perigee and it’s full, so this is close to as large and bright as it gets.
“Blue Moon” has nothing to do with it, in case you were wondering. The only reason it’s called “blue” is the timing, not the color, size or intensity.

On this night of lunatic lunar wonder, I happened to step outside for another look, just now, and saw a slow bright yellow meteor descending on the ENE horizon, here in the Chicagoland area and environs at 11:04 PM CDT.
Woohoo!

And so now, at 11:55PM CDT, I stepped out once more and saw a plane on approach to O’hare fly right across the disk of the now famously full moon. What are the chances? I’m afraid to go out there another time!
