Dean Wharmby, of Rochdale, England, was a former bodybuilder and personal trainer who worked hard to gain the ideal physique. In November, he was told he had just weeks to live after a liver cancer diagnosis in 2010. He blamed his fitness fanaticism for the diagnosis, and died on Sunday.

According to news.com.au, Wharmby, 39, consumed 10,000 calories and seven to eight energy drinks per day. He also admitted to taking steroids at the beginning of his career, and ate high-calorie junk food in his body-building days.

After a large tumor was found on his liver in 2010, he changed his diet, including cutting out sugar and meat. Wharmby, a father of one, chose natural treatments and vitamins instead of chemotherapy and radiation, according to his GoFundMe page.

There have been a lot of pro bodybuilders who did lots of Steroids and HGH die off before they hit 40. They were probably doing a lot of diuretics too.

Since when did fitness become drinking 10,000 calories and seven to eight energy drinks per day, taking steroids and eating high-calorie junk food?

Beyond the roids, it's all the other stuff that (when you take it) you take it every day, multiple times per day.

It amounts to a heavy load on the liver and the compounds are known to be hepatic effectors.

There is nothing natural about bodybuilding, even the so called "natural" programs.

Seriously, this was not fitness it was a type of neurosis. I understand wanting to look fit but to me body builders suffer a similar affliction as women who get absurdly large breast implants. Something in their head tells them that if big is good, HUGE is better.

"Beyond the roids, it's all the other stuff that (when you take it) you take it every day, multiple times per day."

Not really. Most bodybuilder's diets (very high calories during bulking phase) aren't really different from what they ate in the Arnold days. In fact, the top bodybuilders probably eat cleaner than the Arnold era bodybuilders did. In terms of total calories it's not that much more than Michael Phelps eats, he just does an incredible amount of cardio every day when he's training.

I think its the incredible megadoses of roids and especially human growth hormone (HGH). We've seen the long term effects of HGH - it's generally referred to as the "Palumbo effect". The internal organs grow to very larges sizes and pushes out the belly. That's why you see so many of today's bodybuilders with extended (but ripped) guts. Very few have the tiny waist and "vacuum" gut that predominated in the golden era. I much prefer the aesthetic physiques of the Arnold era, like Frank Zane had. Today's bodybuilder seem to go for the super-massive "Hulk" type physique. The top 10 at the Mr. Olympia will mostly top the scales at 270 to 340 lbs. At his prime Arnold weighted around 230 to 240 at most, and he was one of the largest at that time.

Exactly, you look at Arnold at the height of his acting career and now you’d have no idea that he was ever a bodybuilder.

Or Dorian Yates (Former long time Mr. Olympia); hard to believe how quickly he lost all that mass.

Who writes such atrocious headlines?

I suppose it’s never a good idea to bulk up for liver cancer.

And I — and most other women — do not find those huge muscles attractive.

Yeah, people aren’t naturally that bulky, even very strong people. Look at guys that actually do strenuous physical work every day as part of their job, they are strong and muscular, but their muscles are usually lean and compact. Bodybuilders go for bulk mass even though it doesn’t offer any real advantage.

Not really.

I disagree. I body build and I'm a Pharmacologist/Toxicologist and I know the risks. The high calorie diet can foment issues but it's the other supplements. Not everyone has the natural inclination to get to the upper tier of muscled physique, getting up there requires a lot of "support". The stuff taken to get around the ban on illegal stuff comes with a lot baggage.

I do agree with your assessment of physiques - I too prefer the "old school look".

Too often I'll be called upon to lift/move something ridiculously heavy and I have to remind folks that; "These muscles are for display purposes only".

Bet it was the steroids.

Sometimes people just get cancer. Andy Kaufman got lung cancer and never smoked a day in his life.
