She's the woman who co-discovered HIV in 1983, and won a Nobel Prize for her work. But next month, French scientist Francoise Barre-Sinoussi will retire from her lab.
She spoke with CNN at this week's International AIDS Society Conference, in Vancouver, about activism, the future of HIV and why there's still no cure -- as well as answering questions submitted by our readers on Twitter.
Q: At the beginning, the epidemic was in San Francisco in the gay community. How have you seen this change over time?
A: The epidemic changed in the gay population, for example, because they were very well informed and starting to protect themselves against the infection. However, we are starting again to see the epidemic starting in the gay population -- at least in a proportion of the gay population in Europe, Australia and United States. I am a little bit worried that we'll start to have the same profile of the epidemic that we were having in the early 80s.
But in the early 80s we were speaking about the profile of the epidemic in Europe or in United States because we did not know very well at that time what was going on in Africa. But we started to realize the situation in Africa around 1985, and over there it was clear that the epidemic was mostly heterosexual and still is today. The situation in Africa, in a lot of countries, is mostly a heterosexual epidemic.

Not those of us in the country. We gotta a well!...and a generator...and lot’s of guns.
Oops, I forgot, our guns fell in the Ohio river...
But I thought HIV/AIDS researchers were making great headway recommending Trinoasitol as a solution.
They also use A S for contraception in Latin America, and to maintain technical virginity. A S is now a lot more common among US heterosexuals. You can get it from organ transplants and blood transfusions. I have known straight men who caught it from a woman. In the mid 1980s in DC over 80% of the prostitutes tested positive. In Lorton Reformatory, VA, during that period prisoners slept 80 or more in barracks. There was no effort made to separate the infected from the uninfected, and this was after Coop’s report. I read reports then that when surveyed, 30% of men reported being more careless about safe sex. I concluded that this represented a percentage that was subliminally suicidal—the same people who drank and drugged to excess, and frequently had miserable or horrific childhoods. It will be interesting to see if gay marriage reduces some of these problems.
At one point the sodomites were looking to contaminate the blood supply with the virus. Thus their objection to donors being tested, and sodomites being prohibited from donating blood. Just another way of spreading the “gift”.
Stop unnatural actions and iv drug use and the problem goes away.
“horrific childhoods” = over 80% of homosexuals were molested as children.
Rock on. I will stand in that day, too, by God’s help.
True, as I have been told—sometimes by mothers, or female babysitters, but also by fathers, or uncles or neighborhood pedophiles.
Tell that to the people who were not homos but had blood transfusions.
True. That is the unfortunate part. Was trying to make a point though.
Not just any virus, but a highly effective one that destroys your body’s ability to be immune to disease. It destroys even the vehicle by which a vaccine would work.
HAHAHA!
Well it happened in “The Last Man on Earth” and it wasn’t pretty.
