On a brighter note...the Lilys are coming (and a setum update)
A Missouri garlic raiser told me to cut the “scrapes” a few weeks prior to harvesting the garlic. We put them in soups, scrambled eggs, etc.
I just put up 6 qts today. Got 2 more batched gong of about 6 qts each.
If you can make sauerkraut you can make pickles.
We’ve heard that and tested the theory. I can’t say we’ve noticed any difference...and they’re so cool to look at.
Otherwise not much yard work as Mrs. Texan fell a week ago Thursday and managed to break both leg bones. So a surgery and 3 days in the hospital then a reprise surgery yesterday and another overnight stay. No weight on it for at least 2 weeks so I'm having so much fun I can barely stand it....
But I did manage to get my "forever" onions divided and replanted. I have never found their true name but they look a lot like scallions but form multiple bulbs. One bulb will just continue dividing until you have more than you can shake a shovel at. Not quite as tasty as scallions, which I find are easy to grow from seed, but doggone handy. And you never run out.
We had a major lightning strike around 11 Tuesday night. We lost our cable & internet which we just got back about an hour ago. The huge, tall pine took a direct hit .... pretty amazing how far the debris was thrown. Fortunately, the house/well pump are ok except for the cable service. The golf cart that is used for chores is “toast” ... pine that was struck is right next to the shed where the cart was on the charger. It blew half the rafter apart where the charger was hanging & fried it, plus the golf card is “dead” ... will have to take it to the shop and see how bad it is ... probably needs all the expensive stuff replaced!
Redid the ‘crow’ fence - easier to get into. Jalapenos are coming in - jalapeno “poppers” are on the menu for tomorrow’s picnic. First Black Krim tomato was ripe and the first tomato sandwich of the year was terrific! I didn’t check on my little zucchini for a couple of days and it’s now a whopper zucchini ... huge! Two more small ones are on the vine and the cucumber plant that barely survived is climbing the fence support and blooming up a storm. We have plenty of bees (bumble mostly) on the clover so pollination should not be a problem. We’re almost having too much rain - more expected this evening.

Foraging find: 12 lb. of chicken of the woods mushroom.
I only took that much because I had hopes of trading it to the fanciest restaurant in the area for a dinner for two.
Unfortunately, the chef/owner didn’t have time to include it in his menu on Friday afternoon. Apparently I should find large quantities of mushrooms on Tuesday, but he is definitely interested for the future. Someone tell the mycelium.
Now I am halfway through cooking and freezing 12 lb of mushroom. That is one heaped pizza box, one shoebox, and four lunch bags.

I will hire a CPA to keep track of my strawberry harvest next year! I DON'T REMEMBER IF THIS IS 16 OR 18 GALLONS THIS YEAR~~~

My seeding cilantro fell over with our rain, but I shook the water off and they seem ok - for now. More rain expected though.
They have a very mild garlic taste.

Got my first full-sized tomatoes this week, first time I ever got them before July 4th, and they weren’t even Early Girls. Peppers keep coming in, beets ready this week, would have wax beans now but a deer chowed them, zukes are doing great. Just wish this rain would slow down it’s just too dang muddy - we have had probably 5-6 inches over the last week.

Had a shock. My corn was just about ready to pick, in the community garden.............someone thought it was ready and picked every one. Hope they enjoy it.
My cukes are done, so will be pulling the vines and get the keyhole garden ready for fall planting. The tomatoes are going crazy.

My daughter is moving to Denver. She won’t be in the house until August. She asked me what she can plant that late in the season. Any suggestions? I have never planted fall crop in RI or Texas so I had no clue.
turnips, beets, peas, anything in the broccoli/cabbage family if she can find established plants in a store. Also lettuce, radishes, cilantro, bok choi. Denver is a tricky place to grow much of anything. If the late/early freezes don’t get it, the hailstorms will.
Sorry about your Mrs. Hope she is better soon. Your forever onions may be Egyptian walking onions. Do a google image on that. I have a patch that has been going for over 20 years. I have to work to keep it under control. When they get really old and thick like young leeks try oiling them up and salt & pepper and grilling them. Yummy. I am still waiting on tomatoes - Michigan.
