Google says it is "appalled" that its new Photos app mistakenly labelled a black couple as being "gorillas".
Its product automatically tags uploaded pictures using its own artificial intelligence software.
The error was brought to its attention by a New York-based software developer who was one of the people pictured in the photos involved.
Google was later criticised on social media because of the label's racist connotations.
"This is 100% not OK," acknowledged Google executive Yonatan Zunger after being contacted by Jacky Alcine via Twitter.
"[It was] high on my list of bugs you 'never' want to see happen."

I’m appalled that the people actually resemble gorillas. Reality is racism!!!!!
These people do not look like gorillas at all. It is those damn gorillas who look like them!
ROTFL.
Awkward. Just when whites had them convinced that we don’t think of them that way.
Does arab Google label Jews as ‘apes’?
Technology can’t be racist...so it must be the racist employees of Google who programmed the app. Goes to show that deep down, liberals are the most racist.
DANG!
Actually, that is probably incorrect. My guess is that they fed a learning algorithm with no data thousands upon thousands of tagged photos and let the algorithm identify the qualities of the photos with similar tags. So, no one consciously said, “These are the qualities of gorillas.” Instead, there was just a bunch of photos with gorillas in them that also had the associated keyword “gorilla” and the algorithm saw the same qualities in this photo.
That’s how the algorithm is able to identify the window shot as “airplane” even though it is a fractional view of a plane.
Ban the google flag! Ban the website from all government computers!
Right at this minute Al Sharpton is yelling, “JACKPOT!!!!”
That’s just gross.
Oops.
Found by a software developer? Seems questionable.
LOL!
Racist Google......go get em Al.
