Mein Kampf: The world’s most dangerous book?
BBC ^ | 15 Jan 2015 | Fiona MacDonald

Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf falls out of copyright in Germany at the end of 2015. What will happen when authorities can no longer control its publication and distribution?

“They wanted to replace the Bible.” Whispering in a hushed room of the Bavarian State Library, rare books expert Stephan Kellner describes how the Nazis turned a rambling, largely unreadable screed – part memoir, part propaganda – into a central part of the Third Reich’s ideology.

According to the producer of Publish or Burn, which will be broadcast on January 14, it remains a dangerous text. “The history of Hitler is a history of underestimating him; and people have underestimated this book,” says John Murphy, whose grandfather translated the first unabridged English language version in 1936.

“There’s a good reason to take it seriously because it is open to misinterpretation. Even though Hitler wrote it in the 1920s a lot of what he said in it, he carried out – if people had paid a bit more attention to it at the time maybe they would have recognised the threat.”

Some question whether anyone would want to publish it – according to the New Yorker, “It is full of bombastic, hard-to-follow clauses, historical minutiae, and tangled ideological threads, and both neo-Nazis and serious historians tend to avoid it.”

I;ve read it and it really is a a rambling, largely unreadable screed but a lot of what he said in it, he carried out – if people had paid a bit more attention to it at the time maybe they would have recognised the threat.

Never read it due to it never being around when I have looked for it and I don’t want to buy it on line, much like The Turner dairies.

In order to understand what one has pans for like Obama then one only has to read their books, but in these times one can be called racist and a radical if one buys certain books today and then gets flagged.

Yep......it is said that he and a group of other writers were sitting around and L Ron said that he could start a religion and make it a cult if he wanted to.

I think the South Park Episode on Scientology was hilarious.

I always heard that in 1930s Germany, everyone had a copy of the book, but no one actually read it.

You could say the same about the Koran.

They made Chef a pedophile when Isaac Hayes quit the show over the Scientology episode. (He’s a scientologist)

I wrote a paper once on the Turner Diaries, as well as on Birth of a Nation and a few other works (it was a psychoanalysis/genre analysis). You can find all these online, even Mein Kampf, for free, rather easily.

Turner Diaries is practically infantile. Ignoring the racist and extremely violent aspects (people have their heads shot off, a Jewish liqueur store owner has his throat slit from “ear to ear”, a man is taken into the woods and executed because he was going against the Organization, etc etc), it has none of the qualities of an actual novel. I’m sitting there reading chapter after chapter, and these characters are empty, no character development, and don’t act like regular human beings. It’s more of a “project your own self onto these empty husks” type of story. It’s also just basically an instruction manual for the type of mentality needed to run a genocidal revolution. You aren’t missing anything by not reading them.

Mein Kampf did not strike me as unreadable. It certainly wasn’t written perfectly, but it had a flow to it. I don’t see how, however, it could ever work as propaganda except for those who are already committed anti-semites. It certainly is no “bible.” I also notice that Hitler presented himself as a working man, and claimed that was when he first started to hate the Jews. But Hitler never worked. He was a starving artist until the war.

Oops, to clarify. Mein Kampt doesn’t work as “propaganda” except for already committed believers in the sense that it isn’t written well enough to fool anyone who isn’t already fooled.

I found a copy of that book in a pile of snow when I was walking to my battalion hq at Ft. Carson. So I read it. Then I returned it to the snow.
