TIK, I believe you can’t read.
TPA requires Congress to be involved during the entire negotiating process. TPA puts restrictions on the President and if those restrictions are not met, any trade agreement is DOA. TPA requires transparency that we don’t have currently.
The 2015 TPA contains language that further strengthens our sovereignty and also contains the Cruz/Sessions immigration language.
It’s mystifying to me that so many Conservatives are on the side of Democrats and the unions.
I remember this bill of goods! Only last time it was the (Totally notso) "Patriot" Act!
At present, how are trade agreements negotiated? It's my understanding that, if the prez needs to negotiate a trade agreement, the particulars are outlined by Congress first, which passes the power on to the Prez in each case. The Prez negotiates the trade agreement(s), and Congress finalizes these. At least, that is my understanding of the process WITHOUT TPA / TPP / ABCDEF.
Your post makes no sense. What does the Patriot Act have to do with TPA or Trade?
You need to read the TPA Bill.
I further understand that, with TPA, this gives “Fast Track Authority” for the prez to bypass Congress initially, negotiate the agreements, and THEN get Congress’ approval?
“No country will agree to getting the rug pulled out from under them after agreement is reached.”
We’re not a nation in it’s first decade of existence. Nations have been creating agreements and treaties between each other for centuries. And if these deals cannot withstand a little scrutiny from the people’s representatives AFTER all the negotiations have been finalized, they such deals should be an automatic NO!
Because we know what’s going to happen: the Congress will pass TPA, then all sorts of insidious provisions will be inserted deep into the deal (which the congress will not read), it’ll be rushed through on a must pass basis, with no time to read it in its entirety, and members of congress will be strong-armed to vote FOR it just as they are now being strong-armed to vote FOR TPA. And we’ll be screwed yet again as we have been with NAFTA and CAFTA and GATT and PNTR, etc.
As has been stated upthread...the TPP is still in negotiations and the text has not been released.
However, what we are discussing here is TPA, which is NOT hidden.
There IS a difference.
Once again, I did not ask you what you are debating.
I asked you if you had read the secret bill in the secret room?
Have you read the secret bill in the secret room?
It is a simple yes or no question.
The fact that we were told it would be a wonderful thing, and then we found out it wasn't.
Everyone appears to have an opinion about this trade thing.
This is the way I see it.
It does not matter what the TPA reads.
It does not matter what the TPP reads.
It does not matter what the TAA reads.
Here is what matters.
WE DO NOT WANT THIS PRESIDENT TO HAVE EVEN THE APPEARANCE OF SUPPORT FOR ANYTHING HE WANTS THIS BADLY.
Why? Because he will find a way to abuse it. That may sound irrational, but it is the way it is.
TPA provides for the after negotiation scrutiny. That’s why the mandated 60 day public disclosure before a vote.
No. TPA requires Congress be involved in the entire negotiating process. They still have to vote up or down for the bill after it has been made public for 60 days.
Ok, so what does it change from the way we are doing trade agreements now?
“TPA provides for the after negotiation scrutiny. Thats why the mandated 60 day public disclosure before a vote.”
So everybody can look at it for 60 days (which they won’t) but it won’t be able to be amended or revised by the representatives of the people WHO ARE EMPOWERED BY THE CONSTITUION TO REGUALTE TRADE WITH FOREIGN NATIONS. They will simply be ALLOWED to vote yes or no, which will be a strong-armed YES.
Why are you FOR limiting Congress’s institutional powers??
At present, no trade agreement has been reached without TPA in 80 years.
I think TPA strengthens Congress’s role by requiring their involvement from the beginning of negotiations and putting restrictions on the President. TPA lays out the parameters of negotiation from the beginning.
Of course I haven’t read it. What’s your point? That it’s secret and this awful deal. Ok, have you read it? If not, how do you know what is in it, if you yourself haven’t read it?
See, we can go back and forth with this stupid “gotcha” game you’re trying to play, but it’s moot. Because, as I’ve stated before, we aren’t discussing the “secret” bill NO ONE outside of a few in Congress, has read.
You actually believe that?
