I’d like to amend that title to 19 Disgusting Things About The Duggars….and Counting.
Here’s why:
1) Their son Josh was a serial child abuser, yet they don’t seem to even realise this salient fact. ‘He was so young,’ they wailed, ‘he’d just turned 14’…. ‘he was so young’…etc, vomit-makingly etc. Here’s the only fact that matters: Josh Duggar sexually molested FOUR of his own young sisters, one as young as 5, and a baby-sitter.
2) They didn’t report him to anyone for 16 months after he first confessed. That’s not them being ‘failed parents’ as they would have us believe. That’s being an accessory to covering up a crime. When they finally did tell someone in authority, it was to this man. A state trooper who did nothing about it and is now languishing in prison on child pornography charges

4) The Duggars seem more upset that we now all know about Josh’s disgraceful activities than about the activities themselves. Their doe-eyed exclamations of self-pity were utterly disingenuous.
5) They claim none of the victims knew they were being abused, which is obviously palpable nonsense given that some were awake when it happened. The reality is their parents conned them into thinking the abuse wasn’t as bad as it was. Just as they have, for years, conned them into thinking their weird, twisted, religiously zealous, goody-two-shoes lifestyle is ‘normal’ too.

What part of the legal system failed in this case?
That there is ever a statute of limitations on child molestation.
Children will block this stuff for decades. Sometimes MANY DECADES. Maybe a news story finally gets to them and they decide to tell someone and it is found out that their molester went on to molest more, but no prosecution can happen because the crime was so long ago.
Child moleststion is so close to murder that it should have no statute of limitation.
I think the victims spoke on TV tonight but I did not hear them. I have no idea how credible they are. If they say it is all over and all is forgiven, let’s pray that is true. I think that Roman Polanski’s victim has moved beyond her horrific time with him and is living a decent life. Of course it is possible.
The victims of Duggar, though, were forced to forgive him as children. They also were forced to serve him and do chores for him. It could be that their minds are really messed up from all that. Surely you can’t have actual trust in parents who would do that to you; instead, you learn how to play the part. How will this affect their own childrearing? If their kids are sexually abused, will they push their kids to pray it away and go on as though nothing happened? How many generations? I hope it’s over for them.
I don’t love or forgive child molesters. It’s not my place to forgive anyone who did nothing to me personally: that is only for his victims. But I wouldn’t be forgiving anyone who molested me unless they begged for forgiveness, and then I would consider it.

The parents are indeed odd
Josh admittedly was wrong wrong wrong ....and it raises many questions
The wife acts medicated
But the daughters were extremely convincing
I got zero tells of phoniness
Just devout southern fundamental Christendom and beautiful young southern moms
A segment of my culture I’m familiar with
I think the gay agenda tabloids are on a witch hunt as are Christ haters in the media in general
But I also find the parents off the charts almost cultish
But the girls seem well adjusted
I’m conflicted but I don’t think Christians have to be sinless to criticize sin
And there is a double standard
They dont go after Lena Dunham or Paula Poundstone or Bill Clinton for worse crimes
So yes I’m conflicted

As a victim of two different years in my life, I can tell you it has effected every decision I have made in my life. what was done to me int those two years made me make bad decisions to not take full ride scholarships at USC or UCLa and stay at home (still underage) and watch siblings. That was my moral authority(code i live with). Then marriage and because this occurred in to me in childhood it was bound to create problems with my husband, and the kids were going to be protected at all costs. When the perps are part of the extended family. there are bound to be issues. what isn’t at issue that our kids would ever be alone with this person. Impossible. These were over 50 years ago. Never got therapy, nothing, just a secret a “kid “ (little girl is supposed to keep. Ruined my life. Kids should not have to keep secrets.

Convincing? No, but they were quite sympathetic.

I think they've done enough for TLC to give their spinoff show a try.

One thing I’ve noticed about the folks who are participating in this mass internet bullying of the Duggar family is their COMPLETE lack of discernment and proportion.
My comment in post 58 above (to which your post refers) was simply this:

And to this comment you ask if I want to “champion” Roman Polanski’s return to the US. The fact that you are conflating Roman Polanski (who as a 44 year old drugged and raped a 13 year old girl) with the 13 year old Duggar who inappropriately touched his sisters shows that your thinking is deranged (IMHO).

That’s not all that much of a surprise since both could be true. Particularly since there are so many girls.
There’s not a kid alive who doesn’t think that some things their parents believe are just plain nuts, and the Duggar kids have more than the usual supply.
It would have been easier for them to have their own running critique of their family life than if there had been only one or two children. Harder to fool the whole herd.

I tried asking some of the people here who are screaming about this family what they would’ve done if they were the parents.
They never gave me an answer past “call the police.” They’re not thinking past that point.
Yes, his behavior was very disturbing, but the parents sent him away for four months to a Christian rehab center. Then the father took him to the police to report what happened. (How was he supposed to know the cop himself was a criminal?) Then the parents sought counseling for everyone.
I hope he was truly refomed; a 14yo or even a 15yo can be reformed, although you always might wonder. But, I agree with you that the media firestorm around this story makes everything worse for the daughters.

IMO, participants in reality teevee become a commodity. Much to their peril. For all their proclaimed religiosity, the duggars succumbed to the promise of fame and fortune.

There was another reported incident 9 months later. According to the police report, the police were not immediately contacted. Instead, Jim Bob, the dad, met with church elders and agreed Josh should be put in a treatment program. The police report says Josh’s mom, Michelle, said it wasn’t really a treatment center ... they simply sent Josh to a guy who was remodeling a building to do manual labor.
Stop claiming you're speaking for God. Both David and Paul (as Saul) committed MURDER. God redeemed and used them. Paul was specifically chosen demonstrate God could redeem and work through anyone.
The Duggars are far greater witness than you. People like you drive unbelievers from Christianity.
