THROWBACK THURSDAY: IONE QUINBY GRIGGS
Do girls have more puzzling dating problems today than the girls of other years? Has the tendency toward long hair styles changed the boys so that they are adopting other styles of adornment and pastimes usually claimed by girls?
Mrs. Griggs: I attend a state university and feel really weirdo asking you for advice, but I have no alternative. The problem centers around boyfriends of myself and roommate. My roommate and I are fairly attractive blonds and have little trouble dating. The trouble is we're hooked on these two guys, and they have some habits we never ran into before when dating. My boyfriend knits.
At first, it struck me as very strange, but when I got used to the idea I let it ride. Then he told me some other things that made me wonder. Did you ever hear of a guy whose ears are pierced, who did because he thought it was "cool"? I won't go into all the things he does that I never ran across in a boyfriend, but I get upset sometimes.
My roommate confided some of her boyfriend's habits. He not only dyes his hair but sets it himself, kink-style. And when she's over by his frat house, he lounges around in fuzzy girl slippers. My boyfriend also makes a big fussy issue out of my grooming habits, which I think are quite normal. Are we making a big deal out of all this? Should we just tell them to drop dead and keep away from them?

Bruce Jenner did say he/she is the new normal.
We laughed so hard the first time we heard there was a hairspray for men.
I had a now deceased Welsh uncle who knitted, quite beautifully I might add.
Don’t they do it in Scotland?
Well, hell, I am learning to splice rope, which is darn near like braiding hair, so who knows?
During the Middle Ages there existed a Guild for knitters. Yep, that included men. As for sewing, when at sea and sails needed to be repaired, the old salts stitched them quite well.
These young folks don’t read, or they would be familiar with the past and how people lived and got by. How narrow minded.
The guy likes knitting. It is a skill and beats the hell out of playing with his cell phone all day.
I knew a couple of drillers who could spice wire cable and hawser rope. Now that was a talent.
I belong to a weekly knitting group. We occasionally have a man or two come, usually the husband of female members. They don’t usually last with our group because it is 20 or so women chatting for hours on end.
But they knit at home, according to their wives, and I see men in the LYS (local yarn store - knitting acronym) all the time.
I know a couple of younger guys that knit. The one guy made himself some snowboarder hats - colorful. The ones with the ear flaps and chin string.
So many people commented on when he would wear them, and he figured out he could make some money making them. He made a lot of money through college doing that.
There’s nothing wrong with a man knitting. A man invented knitting. Men should not try to look like women, though.
“...I am learning to splice rope...”
A magnificent art, and growing increasingly rare.
How do you know a man invented knitting?
My fraternal grandfather knitted. I still have a pair of mittens and socks he made. He had two wives and fathered 8 children so I don’t think his manhood was an issue. Nice when a man knows how to do something besides drink beer and watch sports.
Yep.....I frequently sew. I have a Tippmann Hand Operated Sewing Machine.
Is he a girly man? Or is he carrying on the manly craft of European fisherman sweaters?
The skill of knitting is no different than cooking, gardening, wood carving, or any other creative and productive skill.
Fishing Net making is basically knitting.
