The rise and fall of Subway: How the world’s biggest food chain lost its ‘fresh’ appeal
Financial Post ^ | June 3, 2015 | Drew Harwell

With 43,945 sandwich shops in 110 countries, Subway has become the world’s most ubiquitous restaurant chain, posting armies of “sandwich artists” in more American outposts than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined.

Yet at the dawn of its 50th birthday, all is not well in the land of Jared and jingles about $5 footlongs. Subway’s U.S. sales last year declined 3 per cent, or US$400 million, falling faster than any other of America’s top 25 food chains. The mega-deli was also knocked back to America’s third best-selling food chain for the first time in seven years.

Subway ascended over the last several decades on the back of broad American tastes, offering a healthy alternative for eaters leery of fast food, and at prices that made it unstoppable during the Great Recession. Even First Lady Michelle Obama praised Subway during a visit last year for “working to get kids excited about eating their vegetables.”

I like Jimmy Johns, but the sandwiches are too small. Jersey Mikes for me.

I think both of these successful chains are hurting Subway.

Way too expensive. 6” sub, bag of chips, small soda. $8.00

Jimmy John’s is much better.

That, my friend, is what I call 'damning with faint praise.'

Personally, my go-to place is Firehouse Subs. Their Hook & Ladder is my all-time favorite. Plus, their employees are consistently phenomenally friendly, courteous and enthusiastic about their jobs.

I think I see the problem right there

My grandkids are still p.o.-ed at Mooch for screwing up their school lunches. They won't be happy about going any place she endorses.

The Hook and Ladder sub is the best. I wish we had a Firehouse Subs closer.

I visit Subway regularly, either getting a 12-inch sub that I can get two meals out of, or a salad. I first discovered them when I was working in Syracuse. Had never heard of them, but found one near SU. When they came to this area, I’d periodically stop at one on the way to work, and pick up something for my supper. The stores here used to offer the point reward card, but they phased that out earlier this year. They must have been losing money with it.

Yeah yeah. I had to look it up! I only recalled some “plastic in the bread” reports.

That’s how I felt. I don’t want a bread sandwich. I want MEAT and lots of it.

The one in my neighborhood is always packed at lunch and supper. If I get there around 3 p.m., I can get in and out without usually having to wait. The lines at meal times are always out the door.

I like the BMT sandwich too. I get the double meat and double cheese on the BMT salads I order there.

Not sure if one of those is close by.

Will try one if I remember.

Trying to stay away from as much processed as I can. Tired of the headaches that come from an increasing number of restaurants. The mom and pop places seem to be easier on me.
