Anyone have any experience with dog calming coats?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 05/30/2015 4:27:41 PM PDT by ken5050

I'm curious if any Freepers have any thoughts on so called dog "calming coats"/anxiety jackets/"Thundercoats" or whatever they're called. I'd never even heard of the things until a few weeks ago, when I mentioned to a friend that my 18 month old chorkie that I rescued (I named her "Reagan") is absolutely petrified of thunder and lightning. She suggested I try one. Reagan's trembling is such that if I could harness the energy, it would likely power my apartment.

We have “Thundershirts” for both of our dogs (Lab/Spaniel and Chihuahua mix rescues) and they help alot. It works on the “swaddling” premise, similar to what calms babies - wrapping them tightly to simulate the womb environment, providing comfort. We also work on de-sensitizing during storms too, providing them with pleasant activities that keep their minds off of the “antagonizer”...they’ve both come a LONG way....

My tomcat has a cardboard box that he hides in when it thunders. He seems happy with it.

Savannah (4 1/4 months old Today) & Molly playing WWD (World Wrestling Dogs)

Savannah isn't bothered by noise- She's Deaf;)

We try to scold Her and She just walks off going "LALALALALA, I can't hear You"

Our 10lb. 11 year old maltese mix is also scared. He used to be terrified but now just wants to stay close, shakes not as much and sometimes pants. I’ve heard about the coats recently too and years ago I would have tried one. Even before the storm comes he knows it and will go to a spot in the kitchen corner were he never goes and lays down if I am nearby. Since your dog is a rescue I would definitely try the coat.

Yup..I ordered one..there were lots of positive comments here, and the 45 day unconditional return policy is very fair. Here in Florida, this time of the year, we get a thunderstorm just about every afternoon/evening..so I’ll have a real good “test”..

I had the same thought. I’ll bet the dog jackets work on a similar principle.

best advise for this breed of dog is to get him an apartment cloth dog burrow. a place to hide with lots of warmth and sound muffling that he can live in.

Here is a link to one to just give you an idea, but I am not endorsing this one, you need to find one that is deeper and thicker for your dog.

You best best bet is to build it custom for your dog.

Yes, I've tried and recommend the Thundershirt. It seems to do what they say it does.

My girl got the scare of her very young life thanks to a neighbor's huge surface to air fireworks launch just as we were walking by their house. She has been afraid of fireworks, gunfire and thunder ever since.

I tried the Thundershirt and it definitely helps her with her anxiety, but she still wants to climb into my lap or stay very, very close until "it" is over.

It's not a cure, but it is a big help.

GNC has a calming effect tablet for dogs that I use occasionally for one of my dogs who absolutely hates lighting. It seems to work. I also try to calmly reassure her we are right there with her. It all seems to work for us.

It’s in the breed of terriers to hide in burrows during stress, and the Chihuahu makes it worse.

Without a burrow, this breed of dogs can go insane if it is constantly stressed.
