What would you say if I told you I could get your Social Security Number if you gave me your name and birth date? And sometimes I don't even need your birth day.

How easy is it? How many people know your name and birth date? I imagine quite a few. And if you have your birth date available on Facebook, LinkedIn or any number of other services online which ask for and publicly display your birth date then A LOT more people have your birth date.

The second half of the equation is finding an online service which you have used which is also vulnerable to the exploit.

SSN originally was a retirement account number. It is now the universal identification number for individuals. There is not even a check digit embedded in the number. Nothing. Anyone who gets that number has it all.

You give it to the IRS, banks, credit cards companies, car dealers, colleges, employers and others.

The local vet requested it on the form for new customer. I left it blank.

As it is now, the SSN is the stupidest thing man has ever invented.

Politicians love it because it enables them to tie all our information together.

It’s got to change. To begin: extend the number by 5 or 6 digits; one of them will be a check digit. Then reserve it for its original purpose. The system designers should be able to figure out the rest.

SSN is Social Security Account Number? Who knew? I thought it was SSAN. I was expecting this article to be about stealing a nuclear submarine (SSN).

An SSN is a nuclear-powered general-purpose attack submarine. SSN is the US Navy hull classification symbol for such vessels; the SS denotes a submarine and the N denotes nuclear power.

An SSBN is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine is a submarine equipped to launch submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) with nuclear warheads.

exnavy- Thank You for Your Service. Did I get this info correct ?

I have My ORIGINAL paper SS Card from 1968. It says right on the FRONT: "NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES"

I've see the new ones- they say no such thing any place.

If they made it illegal to use the SSN for identification purposes it would stun the billion dollar identity theft black market.

But....the day the government makes the SSN illegal to use as identification will be the day they microchip people. I will be leaving the country if that heppens.

My birth day on facebook is not my real birth day.

That's not a bad idea. And as long as you get birthday greetings once a year, it will all even out anyway.
