Colt Python - Nickle...Opinions
Only me | 5/25/15 | Me

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls....

I need some input on a handgun. I was gifted a Colt Python (.357 magnum) from my father. I'd like to know what this thing is worth.

They are unique, and like many classic firearms, we will never seem them duplicated.

I’m a big revolver fan, here is a thread I posted about my “gangster era” Colts and Smiths.

“When I take it out and look at it, I feel like Tony Montana...or some other drug dealer.

Say hello to my little friend! :)

Or maybe like Clem (Christopher Walken)in “Joe Dirt”

You’re talking to me all wrong... It’s the wrong tone. You do it again and I’ll stab you in the face with a soldering iron. Hey, tell me, does your mother sew? BOOM. Get her to sew that!

Actually...I think those grips were on it when he got it. Are they not Colt stock?!

They are, and anyone shooting it for competition (it is set up with target sighting) will want them. BTW, a "nickle" is a five cent coin, but the metallic coating is the element "nickel" (from the German 'kupfernickel,' Satan's copper).

This gun is a treasure to be passed on to someone in the family who will prize it and take care of it. It was (past tense) one of the finest double-action revolvers ever produced. It will doubtlessly just keep on increasing in dollar value as an investment if it is not marred by wearing it out in shooting, poor cleaning, or inept disassembly with poor tools. See:

Those are terrific pistols!

Here's another Dad gave me. He got it from his dad, who got it from a cousin who was a cop in SE Texas.

That’s a gun you can definitely take on the bad guys with.

Keep it. Don’t carry it. Might be okay for special occasions; weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc. If it’s ever confiscated you’ll never see it again and it’ll end up in some judges’ collection. I’ve got a couple with history and they are not for sale at a price any reasonable person would offer. Yours looks like it’s in good shape so I’d insure it around 3 grand. More if it has a history.

A well traveled example of a S&W M&P (Military and Police) 4th Change, made between 1915 and 1942. Likely still shoots good, but don’t run anything too hot through it. Find some wadcutters.

I've had my model 19 since 1971.It's a fun gun alright, but more importantly it can save your life. With the right ammo,it's a one shot stopper.

All you guys talking about guns, tickles the hell out of me. Sorta kinda like we/us gals talking about make-up.

"...Find some wadcutters..."

We don't use wadcutters; we just use weedcutters (wetbacks) down here.

HaHaHaHa! That was a joke!

Down here in S. Texas we can't FIND anything to shoot at!

Seriously...wadcutters is what it's loaded up with right now.

It's fun to wonder what that thing's been through, though.

Ahhhh, those were the days.

"...Might be okay for special occasions; weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc..."

That's a good idea. It would add to the sophisticated look I generally carry. Almost like jewelry. Just more menacing and potentially much louder.

Hell, I'd be the attention-getter.

You know...here in Texas we're about to get open carry. I might have to get me a minimalist holster...with some rhinestones or something.

It looks like it's loaded.

These old S&W's actions just get sweeter the more you shoot them.

It's a keeper, too. It has the marks of ownership. Don't let anybody "refinish" it.

The only Colt I own is a blue Series 80, maybe 10 years old. Probably never part with it, but it’s value is nowhere near the Python.
