"Nimue" - an Arthurian Heavy Metal Song, by Yours Truly
Me, via YouTube (as Hopalong Ginsberg) ^ | 5/22/15 | Me, as "Hopalong Ginsberg"

Posted on 05/22/2015 4:56:43 PM PDT by Slings and Arrows

Having conquered the genre of Jewish heavy metal, I now move on to Arthurian heavy metal, and I'm not talking about plate armo(u)r.

For those of you not familiar with my work (i.e., the entire world minus maybe a dozen people), for the moment I write music under the name Hopalong Ginsberg. In the future I hope to write it under a cute redhead.

If you'd like a free MP3 download of Nimue, click here or here. Click here if you're suffering from a cute deficiency.

Could you please be specific? I use GarageBand on my phone, so yeah, it’s a little crude, but if I know there’s a problem I can sometimes fix it.

My cats are into classical music.

They need to cut loose once in a while. I will show them this.

I haven’t actually found any other than my one song, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there. Ecclesiastes was never more true than today.

I’m not sure how specific I can get, sound recording isn’t really my specialty. But, there’s a resonance to the sound, like it’s being recorded in a room that’s too small. And sometimes, your voice sounds like you’re trying not to sing too loud for the microphone, and it loses something in the process.

I should say, it still sounds better than some professionals I’ve heard! I think you’ve got something there!

Ah, those I can explain. The clean vocals have a small-room reverb on them - it was suppose to subtly fatten them up, but I guess it wasn’t subtle enough. (They’re also double tracked to get that spirits-whispering-in-the-wind quality.) As for the other issue, this song is at the very edge of my modest vocal abilities, and perhaps a bit beyond them. (This is one reason why I’m a songwriter rather than a singer.)

“All My Love” by Led Zeppelin sounds rather medieval, “Arthurian metal” is a cool genre.

If I may.

How about layering multiple tracks.

Develop a base beat and rhythm. Add tracks that enter and shift time while retaining the core beat.

You can lay virtually any lyrics on this.

Basically what I’m suggesting is that you give your songs a deeper and wider back end.

As an example;

King Crimson - Discipline

Easily the best song I’ve heard in the last 5 minutes.

Very interesting idea - I’ve used polyrhythms before, but mostly on the guitars. GarageBand isn’t so hot on bass voices, but layering them could beef up the low end. The only real problem is that I only have 8 tracks before I have to start ping-ponging.

Thanks - that’s something to think about.

It’s studio stuff, to be sure.

But if you lay it out, you could hire folks if you want to play live.

I would think 8 tracks would be sufficient.

Watch this

And listen how he lays his stuff down

And he’s doing it live.
