Man survives shotgun attack after his iPhone takes brunt of blast

A man miraculously survived being shot near his home with a sawn-off shotgun when his iPhone took the brunt of the blast.

The 25-year-old victim sustained serious injuries to his abdomen but managed to get up and head back to his block of flats where emergency services were called.

Ryan Duggan, 19, has been found guilty of attempted murder at Chester Crown Court. He was also found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and is due to be sentenced on 10 July.

The incident took place when the victim approached a group of teenagers who had turned of the water supply to the block of flats where he lived.

During a confrontation, the teenager pulled out the shotgun and fired it at the victim.

The firearm was later recovered by police wrapped in clingfilm and concealed under a bush - with the spent cartridge still inside.

Detective Inspector Gary McIntyre from Cheshire Police said if the victim's phone had not been in his pocket "he would undoubtedly have died".

Duggan’s actions that night were extreme and shocking – the victim went outside to speak to the group about the fact they had turned off the water supply resulting in the defendant shooting him with a powerful weapon.

Fortunately, the victim’s mobile phone took the brunt of the shot and, as a result of this, he survived. This is remarkable – had that phone not been in his pocket at that time he would undoubtedly have died.

Whilst I hope that the conclusion of this case today brings about a degree of closure for the victim I am fully aware of the impact this case has had no him and the fact that the devastating injuries he sustained will affect him for the rest of his life.

Despite making good progress he still requires treatment for his injuries – including further operations and rehabilitation. The nightmare is far from over.— DET INSP GARY MCINTYRE FROM CHESHIRE POLICE

something doesnt seem right about this. was he also wearing a really thick overcoat or something? That’s not a .410 we are looking at and i’ve never seen a shotgun blast not penetrate flimsy gauge tin like that... and looking at that pattern, it was really close range too

I sort of agree.

This is a good post, but a bit suspicious due to the things you point out.

What’s wrong with a 410? It will ruin your day pretty bad too...

It can also fire 45 cal bullets too, as well as .410 shot- and a 45 is a badass thing to be hit with

I love the 410 - it can be used for interior home defense without taking out structural walls

It also rid my yard of squirrels, saving me $800 the exterminator wanted (I kept missing with the 22 - i need to get it sighted in better)

it's not "Tin", FunkyZero, it's Polycarbonate. They make bulletproof clipboards out of one of the early polycarbonates that was a quarter inch thick for police use. I saw one demonstrated that stopped .38 Specials at point blank range back when I managed The Old Sacramento Armoury in the 1970s. Impressive. The manufacturer claimed their 3/8" thick model would deflect .357 and .44 magnums and had videos showing it being done.

These back cases of the iPhone 5C aren't that thick, but the individual pellets in the shotgun blast aren't the monolithic slug or a .38 either and individually don't carry too many foot pounds of energy..

The barrel was very short, reducing muzzle energy. Perhaps that contributed to your observation.

Also, it appears that the shot hit the phone at an angle..which would also reduce energy delivered to the phone.
