The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I can’t imagine it either. LOL
But I’m waiting - natural procrastination is a mile wide and 10 miles deep in our family. Besides, I just don’t like to garden when there’s no sun and cool enough to need a jacket.
My usual time for most summer stuff is June 1, so I still have a week to procrastinate. Rain, snow, wind, all good excuses to do something else. LOL
Will do. I only ping once a week on Friday afternoons, but we do keep the thread going during the week, and people check in as their schedule permits.
Today is Johnny’s second chemo. I’m waiting for an email from him when he gets home. It is 4:21 pm, central time here and so far, no email. Will report when I get one from him.
When it rains it pours. With all the drought in the past years, it seems strange for Texas to have “too much” rain!
We have plenty of clay in our soil, so the rainy season can sometimes be problematic here too. My raised beds with Mel’s mix saves the day then.
It’s almost impossible to overwater that mix, and the vermiculite holds water and helps during the dry season.

One of our cherry tomato plants has a red tomato !!
I have a stick that is about the size of the business end of a ball bat, and quite a bit longer. I use it as a walking stick.
Pointing it at the dogs and waving it while shouting seems to work, but isn’t it annoying to have a dog charging and snarling when you are in your own yard?
We used to walk around the block for exercise, but there’s so many dogs charging these days, you can’t really enjoy the walk. And if the owner’s happen to be outside, they all just say oh they wouldn’t hurt you or bite you.
Several of them took to chasing our grand daughter when she waiting for or getting off of the school bus. Hubby went over to the owner’s house, and told them they needed to keep them indoors when the buses were running, and if they didn’t quit bothering her, he was going to shoot them.
They were better for a while, but now we have some more newbies and their dogs are beginning to become an issue too.
Thanks Marcella, I was wondering about him, because he’s usually one of the first ones posting. Still praying every day for him and Arrowhead.

You better believe it. One of these days either me or a dog is going to be compost.
Hubby’s thinking about using a 22 magnum, but I’d rather just have something that would hurt just enough that they would stop coming into the yard, but not really hurt them.
I’ll have to remember to add vermiculite to the soil next year. Thanks. I have only been in Texas for 4 years so it has been gardening by trial and error every year.
A BB gun (not pellet) is effective, but I've been called out on that even though the dog was attacking one of my cats at the time. I told the owner if it happened again I would use something a little more lethal. I never had the dog in my yard again. By the way I'm not known in my neighborhood as "that guy".
The Mel’s mix is equal parts by volume of compost, vermiculite, and peat moss. It drains really well. When the weather gets dry it really needs to be mulched to help with retaining moisture.
Our mix is about 6 inches deep, and we add to it each year. So these are our primary Spring beds. Regular amended soil for the summer doesn’t dry out quite as fast. That’s why the Vermiculite and mulch is so important for the Mel’s Mix.
Now on to the gardening, my garden is kicking butt this year. We had a couple of cold nights but all I lost was some green onions, no biggie. I put plastic juice jugs over my tomato plants which are still pretty small. I still have some empty space to fill and will get some pictures soon. I have had to do pretty much all the yardwork while hubby recuperates. Tomorrow the barn gets painted, well maybe half of it.
If I could have one wish this weekend it would be to be able to get to Chicago and visit some graves and lay some flowers. It won't happen but I am hopeful sometime this summer I can go.

Just a few drops on a strip of cloth in your garden every few days will keep the rabbits out.
I send my hubby out in the evening for that duty. :0
