Why parents should stop hoping their millennial kids will get married
Chicago Tribune ^ | 5-17-2015 | Brigid Schulte, Washington Post

Millennials are poised to become the nation's largest living generation this year. As they grow as a percentage of the population, more of them will reach the age at which Americans historically have gotten married. And many baby-boomer parents are probably eagerly anticipating the big day when their son or daughter walks down the aisle (and the grandkids that will follow.)

But, according to new research, millennials are not showing many signs of interest in getting hitched as they get older, and, as a result, the marriage rate is expected to fall by next year to its lowest level to date.

That is a finding by Demographic Intelligence, a forecasting firm with a strong track record. "Millennials are such a big generation, we're going to have more people of prime marriage age in the next five years than we've had at any time in U.S. history. For that alone, we'd expect an uptick in marriage rates," said Sam Sturgeon, president of Demographic Intelligence. "That's not happening."

In the firm's new U.S. Wedding Forecast, compiled from demographic data, Google searches and a host of other variables, Sturgeon projects that by 2016, the marriage rate will fall to 6.7 per 1,000 people, a historic low. That includes people getting married for the second or third time.

In 1867, the first year for which national marriage statistics were recorded, the marriage rate was 9.6 per 1,000 Americans. It peaked in 1946 at 16.4 per 1,000 as men were returning from World War II, and it bounced around from 8.5 in 1960 to a high of 10.8 in the mid-1980s. Starting in the 1990s, it began a long and, in the 1990s, precipitous drop.

Don’t worry, those gay couples will catch up and improve the replacement numbers.....all it takes is encouragement and pretty soon they’ll start bringing children into this........uh........never mind.

Parents should throw these slugs out of their house and bank all their money for their old age, because they will need it. The Malingering Generation should be told to sink or swim.

Millenials are too busy wondering how after 6+ years of supporting a really cool guy that things have “unexpectedly” not turned around in the job market.

I’m a “millennial”, so is my brother, so is my step sister and step brother. We’re all married and have kids.

Marriage was poisoned by the boomers, the homos are just opportunistic parasites taking advantage of the weakened host body.

“Parents should throw these slugs out of their house ...”

That’s rich. Their divorced parents should throw them out for not getting married?

To read the news, you’d have to think that they are all trying to figure out their true gender identities and sexual preferences.

I can’t speak for the person who wrote that. But my interpretation was that parents should strongly encourage their adult children to grow up and take adult responsibility for their lives. And part of that would be settling down. Hopefully that person will come back and explain what they meant.

You of course are on the right track as population control is a favorite agenda of the left. Heterosexual marriage serves as the ideal institution for raising moral and productive citizens. When children are born outside of this arrangement to women with no husbands we have societal decay and eventual chaos. Single motherhood is the scourge of our nation. Say it out loud and you may be stoned to death.

The family unit ( to include both a husband, wife and children) is the bedrock of any civilized society, and it’s destruction ( through various means to include..the LGBQT lobby, divorce, abortion, birth control, acceptance of sex outside of marriage, pornography) is the root cause for the ever continuing collapse of the USA.

Not many gay people actually want to get "married" - it's about destruction, not about actually engaging in what they know they are pretending is the same as a real marriage. I expect my kids to get married, and I have spent the last couple decades teaching them traditional American values and traditional Christian values. Those who decided to engage in casual divorce over nothing (not those who had real reasons, just those who got bored and left) should not be surprised when their kids don't embrace an institution that they showed little respect.

The abandonment of the nuclear family is the single most significant factor in the growth of government.

Adolescence, it appears, has been allowed to be extended to about 40 years old. Maturity wise, anyway.

Gay Marriage doesn’t affect that group. All the gay marriages I have seen seem to be middle-aged or 40 somethings with kids.

The birth rate for 20-somethings hasn’t fallen much, but the marriage rate has.
This is why the illegitimacy rate for under 30 women is half or more.
Some get married later, after having a kid or two, seeing marriage as a capstone instead of milestone to reach before having kids, while many will never get married.
