A Long Island man accidentally set his rental car ablaze in an effort to kill bed bugs, police say.
Authorities say 44-year-old Scott Kemery poured rubbing alcohol on the bed bugs because he thought it would do the trick. Then, he lit a cigarette, setting himself and three cars on fire.
"He said he had bedbugs in the car, and someone told him if he saturated them with alcohol, it would kill them," Det. Sgt. Edward Fitzgerald told Newsday. "So he went and bought some alcohol, he poured it all in there and he sat in his car and lit a cigarette.
Kemery was treated at a local hospital for second-degree burns, but will be OK.

Bedbugs in a rental car? Should have burned the thing.

What does kill bedbugs (though it takes repeated treatments) -
Diatomaceous earth (food grade) dispersed as a very fine aerosol;
Amorphous silica gel (CimeXa) also dispersed as an aerosol;
Sufficient dry heat to kill the eggs, nymphs and adults (high setting on clothes dryer for minimum of an hour);
Or for fast knock-down, spraying with organic pyrethrum spray, which paralyzes the crawling insects and has residual effects for up to a month.
Setting the car on fire is just an overly emotional response.
Shirley, he didn’t fall for the old “how to get rid of crabs” about shaving one side, setting fire to the other side. and stabbing the survivors with an ice pick. -ping-
Another thing you can do is to either wrap the legs or bedframe, that touches the floor, in plastic wrap or you can put Vaseline, in generous quantities. As the bed bugs try to climb on you bed, they get caught on the Vaseline and then you can just wipe them clean off and reapply it.
I saw a report on Canadian TV the other month that some Pakis brought back from their third-world homeland phosphine pellets to deal with bed bugs in their Western-civilized apartment. At least one of their kids died.
