Letters to the Editor: Build desalination plants, not a high-speed rail
Long Beach Press Telegram ^ | 4-15-2015 | Edna Jones, Pasadena & Richard Morrison, Lakewood

Instead of spending money on a bullet train, California should build desalination plants. We cannot live without water or food. California supplies 70 percent of the food for the country and we have cut off water to the farmers to save the smelt fish. The legislatures are more interested in catering to their money backers than doing what is right for the citizens of California.

Which sounds better, water or rain? Anyone with an ounce of common sense and a firm grasp on reality would say water is the only answer. We don’t need a bullet train that starts in south nowhere and ends in north nowhere. We will need water for all of our life, but no one will ever need the train to nowhere.

Desalination is one method of gaining usable water as well as conservation of water being another. As with other commodities, we will be water rationed when needed and taxed whether needed or not, but paying for a train that won’t bring a single drop of water to a single community is beyond common sense and reality.

That’s 4,100 gallons a day. Family of 4 taking 10 minute shower is about 200 gallons. Toilets are 1-2 gallons per flush, dishwashers and washing machines are less than 20 gallons.

I know its California and they like to water the tard but even that is hard to use that much water a day.

Actually can;t sell them. They are insurance against drought.

Like washing your car, build a desal plant and the permament state of drought predicted by local Global Warmist Tim Flannery goes away.

No.

It’s not necessary.

Build a dam. Some more aqueducts.

Use all the water, not just half of it.

The largest privately owned cattle ranch is in Hawaii...

LDS, Inc....owns the ranch in Florida.

Aren’t toilets on ships flushed with salt water? What would be the infrastructure change needed to flush residential toilets with salt water, or at least “gray water”? Seems a waste to flush ‘em with drinking water.

I have no personal knowledge about the largest cattle ranch but there was a show on The History Channel and they did say Florida. Maybe they said in the continental US but I don’t know.

"California continued to be the leader in fresh vegetable production. The state accounted for more than 48 percent of national production and more than 50 percent of the value. Florida was the next largest producer of fresh vegetables, followed by Arizona."

"California again led the nation in production and value of the eight selected processing vegetables in 2012. The state raised more than 70 percent of the national production and 51 percent of the national value. Other top processing vegetable states included Wisconsin, Minnesota and Washington. "

You’re assuming politicians want to help and make things better.

The largest cattle ranch owned privately...is in Hawaii.

In the show I saw, they said the ranch was owned by the Lykes family.

Every time I see our president's picture, a big sign in my head says: "What were you people thinking?" You might have had an excuse the first time, but you'd think you'd learn.

Sounds very familiar, doesn't it?

Lykes family ranch is privately owned....around 340k acres, mol.

Parker ranch is now in trust...1/2 million acres, mol.

In total...LDS, Inc has them all beat. Big acres in FL, NE, OK...and elsewhere.

Why haven't any politicians suggested this?

Because it's an intelligent idea? Because moonbeam and his party of gaia worshippers want less people, except for mexicans and central americans in California, because moonbeam doesn't think having his name attached to desalination plants is as sexy as having it attached to a big phallic symbol?

Agreed! Build the desalinization plants and nuclear power plants needed with each one all up and down the California coast.

[The reason is the plutocrats with influence in politics won’t allow it. They live along the coast. See?]

Remember how many people are in California (re. nuclear energy or fossil fuel needed, below), that the drought continues to worsen, and that the trend is expected to go on for a very long time. I pasted some of the quoted text in bold font for emphasis and easy reading.

Wikipedia (as accessed on April 15, 2015)
Cogeneration
Cogeneration is the process of using excess heat from electricity generation for another task: in this case the production of potable water from seawater or brackish groundwater in an integrated, or "dual-purpose", facility where a power plant provides the energy for desalination. Alternatively, the facility's energy production may be dedicated to the production of potable water (a stand-alone facility), or excess energy may be produced and incorporated into the energy grid (a true cogeneration facility). Cogeneration takes various forms, and theoretically any form of energy production could be used. However, the majority of current and planned cogeneration desalination plants use either fossil fuels or nuclear power as their source of energy. Most plants are located in the Middle East or North Africa, which use their petroleum resources to offset limited water resources. The advantage of dual-purpose facilities is they can be more efficient in energy consumption, thus making desalination a more viable option for drinking water.[16][17]

California supplies 70 percent of the food for the country...
*****************************
I call BS on that, unless some source is provided to say it’s true. ...Numerous other States provide a LOT of the food; i.e., corn, beef, wheat, seafood, fruits, vegetables, etc.
