Taking a trip to NYC!
4/15/2015 | eeevil conservative

Posted on 04/15/2015 1:58:44 PM PDT by eeevil conservative

My son is graduating from college! Worked his way through on his own! As a gift, I am taking him to NYC. Staying with my sister in Queens.

I want to do just ONE thing that is extra special- like to a taping of the The Tonight Show?

Any ideas, suggestions?

We will be going to see Statue of Liberty, Coney Island, Central Park, etc... But I am looking for one thing that will stand out for a young man graduating college-- no girlie clubs! MOM is on this trip!

As I recall, you have to mail for tickets to the Tonight Show like 2 yrs in advance.

One of the greatest things about NYC is Radio City Music Hall...The Top of the Rock is a great observatory and a tour of NBC (even though it is a far left organization) has so much history. Most of the TV syndicated shows are winding down taping for the season, but it is always fun to see whatever show may still be in production. Also, Bemlemens Bar at the Carlyle is a must!

Grand Central Station is stunning.

I agree with the person who said go to Grand Central at rush hour. Get there slightly before five and stand on one of the two staircases at either end so you’ll be out of the way. You can try to get across the floor in the middle of it if you’re brave.

You can combine this with a visit to the Oyster Bar in the same building, lower level. Not everything is expensive. You can just get a few oysters if you like, at the bar or the lunch counter, or whatever else suits you. They are the most reliable seafood place in the city. They constantly test the waters where the seafood comes from and their reputation for total freshness has never been tarnished.

Then Times Square at “crazy hour,” when everyone is rushing to the theaters. Bloomberg ruined it a bit with all the pedestrian spaces but it is hard to ruin.

All three can be done in one trip.

Also, be sure to go someplace very elegant, if only for a drink. One of the great hotels.

If you want to go to a political meeting of some kind, you can probably do that if you get in touch with someone who lives here.

Have a wonderful time. I love New York. Have lived here since I was twenty and never want to leave.

Trapeze School of New York. Can’t recommend it highly enough. My college age kids had a fantastic time; it’s an experience they won’t forget.

Nope, it’s still there.

Capitalist idea to send em there as well. I would have mentioned it in my Wall Street musts but, thought it had been removed...

Dude!

You are the one they should be talking to.

You guys are always the best and I love shaking your hands as I walk through town.

I found the Forbes Museum because a cop told me about it and it was free!

Sadly, it’s gone.

Thanks for all you do.

PM this Mom and tell her the amazing things you can see for free in Manhattan.

Heck, going up to seventh floor at Bergdorff’s is always fun.

Oops..my bad....

Here ya go! Circle Line it goes around Manhattan..I think you can combine it with a ticket to the Statue of Liberty..save some $$$

I'd walk across the Brooklyn Bridge...you'll want to stop and look a lot..also, it can be pretty crowded..

Hope YOU like steak... Peter Lugers I expect a written report when you return..

Have a great trip..and congrats to your son...what are his plans?..job? grad school?

A few final thoughts:
.
Skip the Circle Line. It is time-consuming, and parts of it are inevitably very boring. You’re not really seeing New York.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is totally free since it is on public land. I would go, even though it can seem overwhelming. Go to the second floor and see the Rembrandts, and then whatever else takes your fancy, or just have lunch there and then go somewhere else, but do see the Rembrandts.

FYI..Check out thefactor's homepage..he says: "And if you're ever in NYC, send me an email and I'll buy you a single malt or a beer."

He's a man of his word...

One more thing..make sure you walk through Grand Central. It's spectacular since they cleaned it up and restored it...and see it before DeBlasio lets the homeless move back in..
