What "H1B" really means! ~ Vanity

Posted on 04/15/2015 1:40:11 PM PDT by GraceG

Reading all these sotries about people whining how fast food jobs should be paying 15 bucks an hour got me thinking about all the people we hire from other countries when we have all these well educated native born people struggling to find work...

What does H1B really mean?

H1B = Hire 1 Barista

So for every foreign worker we bring in on a H1B, we end up having to "Hire One Barista" down the street at starbucks...

The H1B program is directly tied to the number of colleg students having to take a lower paying job handing out coffee to foreign workers at the starbucks across the road from where the H1B workers are working.

Additionally, the companies can resort to defacto slavery by conditioning retention of the H1B status by the employee.

Looks like the H1B visa program is going to go into overdrive no matter who gets elected. Nobody represents the people anymore. We have no voice.

Bump!

One justification for bringing in an H1B worker that has NO validity is that the imported worker is cheaper. That ought to be obvious.

I’m sure that is in fact what is driving the abuse, and that needs to be stopped forthwith. One way this could be done is to require all H1B applications to be accompanied by a sworn statement of the wage to be paid along with a statement backed up by evidence that the wage of the H1B worker is at least 120% of the average wage in the company for US citizen employees in similar jobs.

H-1B has zero oversight, none. It is a rare thing that the “feds” go after worker visa abuse, especially H-1B. I am not sure if anyone really enforces the quota. The raping of the USA continues.

We follow the laws and regulations meticulously regardless of whether anyone "checks up on that."

So here it is people the H-1B is based on the "honor" system. What a f-ing joke this country is. You too.

A female Indian programmer told me the Mother Ship put her husband on salary, worked him 70-80 hours a week, but only billed the client for 40.

And this would be completely expected on a fixed bid contract. There's not enough info in the story told to you to make a conclusion.

Read my original post. The H1B was the perfect candidate for the job. I would have hired this guy even if I could find an American who was willing to work for less pay.

And I'll fill you in on another dirty little secret that nobody likes to talk about in this country ...

If you're looking at a prospective candidate for a position in my industry, a recent immigrant from a country with a British system of education will typically read and write English better than his American counterpart ... often to the point where it's an embarrassing indictment of American culture and our attitudes about education. Interestingly ... and I don't think this is a coincidence ... the three best young engineers in my company when it comes to writing skills are all American-born children of immigrants.

In my company we compensate our junior engineers on an hourly basis for any time beyond 40 hours per week.

The case you cited doesn't make any sense from a business standpoint. Why work someone 70-80 hours per week if you're only going to bill the client for 40? The real racket in many professional firms is to work someone 70-80 hours per week, pay a straight salary, and then bill the client for the full 70-80 hours. I don't understand how the company comes out ahead if they're doing it the way you've described.

That’s a good question; I’m not even sure about that. I will look into it and follow up on it.

The question would be "How many non-Americans work for you?" LOL

So let me get this straight ...

You're going to sit there and criticize me for the employees I hire, and yet I've hired more Americans since Monday than you've employed in your entire life?

Every one of those countries had to grant me a work visa equivalent to our H1B.

If you had an expat package from a company which also employed you in the US, went overseas, and were paid in the local currency it would be more comparable to the US's L1 visa. If, as I have done, you were a US employee getting paid in US dollars on overseas assignments you only needed some type of visitor visa (different countries treat business trips differently.)

H1B is to skilled workers what illegal immigrants are to unskilled they are nothing more than an attempt at keeping wages low and creating virtual slave employees.

The program is abused wholesale, and every major company breaks the law using them, yet no one enforces the laws.

As far as I’m concerned the entire program should be no more than 10k a year.. the intent is to hire a foreigner for a job no american has the skills for (obsolete technologies) there is no way you can’t find an American to do coding or support software or hardware... 99.9% of H1B employees are done in direct violation of the law.

And what jobs are your H1B folks doing?

If you answer, software development, hardware and software support and you aren’t developing in COBOL or supporting a system built in the 1980s or prior you are in direct violation of the intent of the law even if you claim you have all your i’s dotted for the regulators.

There is no shortage of domestic software developers and support engineers, claiming you can’t find a native to do the jobs in those fields is a flat out lie.

I have sat through enough C level meetings to know exactly how companies play the game with the H1B thing.
