(Microsoft) Office Lens comes to iPhone and Android (Killer Pocket Scanner App)
Microsoft Office Blogs ^ | April 2, 2015 | OneNote Team

Just over a year ago, we introduced Office Lens for Windows Phone—and over that time the app has become one of the most popular free apps on Windows Phone, with an average rating of 4.6 stars (out of 5) from more than 18,500 reviews.

Today, we’re releasing Office Lens for iPhone and Android phones.

Office Lens is a handy capture app that turns your smartphone into a pocket scanner and it works with OneNote so you’ll never lose a thing. Use it to take pictures of receipts, business cards, menus, whiteboards or sticky notes—then let Office Lens crop, enhance and save to OneNote. Just like that—all the scanned images you capture from Office Lens are accessible on all your devices.

> Even the MS box I own uses a version of Open Office. It seems to open more weird files than MS office does.

Yeah, I'll agree with the weird file aspect. I've used Open Office on Linux and Windows for about a decade, also NeoOffice on Macs and Libre Office on Linux.

But there are times when working with documents from customers and clients where my edits have to go back to them for review, that only the Microsoft Office applications will work right. I swear the Microsoft apps have a way of knowing that you've screwed with a document using some other tool, and they puke on it. So I keep a copy of real MS-Office around for those occasions...

Whatever tool works for you. I've been called on to open weird documents that won't open more than I've been called on having MS original Office. It's all just tools.

I try to not get emotionally involved with the tools I use. Except the wood lathe. I love it.

Funny you should say that... just the other day I was reflecting on the fact that of all the tools in my shop, the drill press is the one I would miss the most.

Horizontal axis; vertical axis. There's something about rotation...

Time to hit the sack...

Tell your friend to try Bing Maps.

I always use Google Search - not Bing Search - because I like Google more.

But, in my opinion, Bing Maps are clearly superior to Google Maps, and easier to use.

I do very basic map stuff, on my home PC mostly, so I'm not sure how good Bing Maps is for advanced users, or how it compares to other mobile map links.

I had a windows phone and it had text scanning and language translation. It worked really well. I miss it.

Thank you for posting this. I have been using a Windows phone for over a year and was unfamiliar with this excellent app.

I use JotNot on my iPhone 4s for capturing white board discussion notes. Great app. Deskews the image automatically, detects, the edges of the whiteboard automatically, excellent white-point adjustment, save in multiple file formats and emails the resulting file to recipients. Highly recommended.

Thanks for posting. The android version appears to be in testing so it’s not available for download unless you become a tester. Looks useful though.

I can't find the app in the google store?

BTW, I switched from older window 7.5 to Android because I got a free phone. I like the features on Android which are now available on 8.1. I do not like the instability of Android. If I can find a phone that doesn't cost and arm and leg, I am back to windows...

For the iPhone and iPad people ... here’s some info on HOW TO FIND those apps that are scanners, PDF creators, and can modify and add to those PDF files, plus store and retrieve from Dropbox and iCloud, plus send by e-mail or send to other apps on your iOS device ... AND ... How to get many of those apps for FREE even when they are sold for a few dollars!

Get the app called — AppZapp

AppZapp HD Pro - by ConIT AG
https://appsto.re/us/eVOHz.i

It’s available in an iPhone and iPad version. You can find the apps here, plus you can have them send you an ALERT when the app goes on sale or FREE. I usually get my apps for free, when they go on sale, maybe one day out of the year. That’s the day I get it ... :-) ...

I’ve got about 400 apps from the Apple App Store, with about 350 of them on my iPad, currently. I have numerous PDF scanner apps, but one I’ve used a lot is “Scanner Pro” by Readdle.

Another one I’m about to get for its ability to do whole lot with PDF files is ...

PDFpen 2 - by SmileOnMyMac, LLC
https://appsto.re/us/rQJf3.i

You can get a simpler version of the same, which I got for free by using AppZapp ...

I have had very good success with Turboscan. Can anyone compare/contrast with other apps mentioned here?

For the iPhone users here ...

Office Lens by Microsoft Corporation

There is NOT an iPad version, and it is NOT a “Universal” app, but as iPad users know, they can still use iPhone (only) apps, although it is awkward!

I would have thought that Microsoft would have had enough sense to, at least, make it a “Universal” app — and therefore usable for both iPhone and iPad!
