Reporters don’t typically get that the kilogram unit of measure is one of mass and not of weight (which is a force measurement); a kilogram is still a kilogram in a weightless environment. The newton is the force measurement, and a kilo is 9.8 newtons on the surface of the earth.

They also manage to conflate speed (a scalar) and velocity (a vector), energy and power, and on and on....

I wish the scientists all the best luck in their quest for the unchanging kilo. An esoteric problem if ever there was one.

Using the metric system, one hundred kilograms should equal the largest unit of measurement we have, the Rosie O’Donnell. Just use that as the standard.

"Developing the perfectly round and flat sphere"?

I can see how that will be a difficult task!

It’s been many years since school but I thought a gram was the weight of 1 cc of H2O at 72°F.

I’ve often wondered that if the space inside atoms was expanding, how would we ever know, since everything would be expanding at the same rate.

There is no absolute standard of measure. Every standard depends on some other. Pick something, and say it’s a kilo, and be done with it.

precious object is—very gradually—losing weight

This isn't necessarily a bad thing; I've always wanted to weigh less.

By the way, how is the meter holding up? I've also always wanted to be taller.

That is true, but in usage it is a standard for weight and mass.

The "Metric System" is one of the most destructive things that has ever happened to the United States.
It's not about "ease of measurement".
It's about power.
Do away with it here in the Unted States.
Refuse to accept it, and use ONLY SAE.
Then jobs might return to the United States.

Just go to London and use the official pound weight and multiply by .45. Then sell your platinum kilo stick on ebay.

The most efficient way to accomplish redefining the kilogram or any other scientific venture is to employ Common Core Math, it will do whatever you want it to do.

This has been around a while. A kilo is a certain number of silicon atoms. I lost count after the first billion or so.
