Downton and out: 6th series will be last as cast gather to read through the new script

The doors to Downton Abbey are finally closing.

Carnival Films and ITV have announced that there will be no return to the famous home of the Crawley family after the sixth season airs, as they want to end on a high.

Downton Abbey has been a huge international success, selling to broadcasters around the world, but its ratings in Britain had started flagging.

NBC Universal, which owns the production company behind the show, said in an internal note to staff that the long-running drama was ‘approaching its natural conclusion’.

The internal note, seen by the Daily Mail, said: ‘Whilst we are all sad to see Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame’s unique drama approaching its natural conclusion, the difficult decision has been taken to wrap up production while the show is still at its peak – in popularity, as well as in the quality of the storylines and the series overall.

‘Rather than allow any further media speculation about the show’s future, we want to use today’s announcement to build anticipation for the momentous final season’.

Thank you, BBC! No more *itchy Mary! No more stupid expressions from dumb*hit Elizabeth McGovern! No more historic revisionism regarding the oh-so-ahead-of-their-time acceptance of homosexuality! And no more treating poor Edith like she’s a social untouchable.

Love the show. Looking forward to watching the final season.

Ditto. Maggie Smith kind of spilled the beans, a few months ago.

Like Upstairs Downstairs, they'll be back eventually.

The franchise is too big a deal to just die.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to the Lady Mary / Lady Edith slapdown on WWE.

I watched some of that, and then it disappeared. I thought it was coming back (I program the DVR a week in advance) but then it never showed up in my line up.

We’ve been enjoying Ballykissangel (a series set in an Irish village that originally ran in the early 1990s) but I think that it is coming to an end. At least, there are no more episodes forthcoming next week.

New Tricks also seems to be coming to an end, and they are replacing it with Hustle which I’ve already seen.

As far as mysteries are concerned, we’ve enjoyed the Midsomer Murders, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Morse, and Mrs. Blake’s (Diana Riggs) Mysteries.

Miss Fisher is not playing right now, but it is set in Australia in the period right after WWI and boasts fabulous cars, clothes, and table settings. Miss Fisher is a woman who was an ambulance driver in the resistance and who outlived all of her male relatives and so inherited all of the money. So, she is an independent woman who can afford a fabulous lifestyle while she solves crimes. She’s a real character. She’s probaly available on NetFlix. You’d probably enjoy that series, if you haven’t seen it.

It was good in the beginning but it’s time to put it down. Season five was a mess. The best way to watch it is by recording it and fast forwarding through the homo stuff ( and Edith). I bet they’ll cast a boyfriend for Thomas.

The dog went suddenly. It was almost like they’d heard my daughter’s remark!

Cora thought the dog didn’t look right, and Mary thought the dog looked fat and probably was goiig to have puppies. Robert took the dog to the vet and came back with the diagnosis. Cora allowed the dog to share her bed for the night and then they were picking out headstones for the dog.

I thought that they were awfully casual bout an animal that supposedly had been with them for 12-14 years!

LOVE Miss Fisher! They were playing it on my local PBS station, but have stopped. Replaced it with Mrs. Bradley (Diana Rigg) which is also good - then they went on their fund-raising tear and I haven’t been back yet to see what’s on now.

I’m out in the boonies, so only have Free Government TV. Suffice to say, I am pretty picky about what I waste my time on, considering the offerings. ;)

I LOVE the Jesse Stone series with Tom Selleck. Oh, My! *SWOON*

I’m predicting that Tom Branson and Lady Mary will get together, and that Edith will end up saving Downtown with her publishing business. Moseley and Baxter will hook up, the Dowager will die and leave everything to Matthew’s mom. Daisy will join the Royal College of Surgeons and Thomas will get the Oscar Wilde Flamer Award.

Lord Grantham will croak from a heart attack and Cora will look sad and vacuous then go to America.

The series really didn't survive Matthew's death.

I thought it would be a timeless classic I would watch again and again, but now when Season Six is done that will probably be the last time I watch it.

We like Jesse Stone too. Love his dog. Looks just like my (late) Max. They had a new one about 6 weeks ago. How do you see them if you don't have cable, or dish?

I like Miss Fisher better than Mrs. Bradley, but they are both good.

I was looking forward to Outlander.....the whole Scottish history theme.....
......with a time travel premise.....

....but as good as it promised to be.....

....it finally resorted to what many of these ...’could be worthy’ ....series resort to......nudity.

Just ruins it...truly.

Or the hugely likeable BBC Grantchester series.......resorted to a graphic homo theme,

So very tired of it all.

I agree. Makes it rather pointless to invest in the DVDs, doesn’t it?

Big Miss Fisher fan here. They’re going to have a 3rd season. Great characters! Especially like Mr. Butler.

The finale of season 2 sort of made me scratch my head... skiing in Australia? Well, with the help of Aussie FReepers I found out that there is a downhill skiing area northeast of Melbourne. It’s got an altitude of about 6500’ (I live at 7400’).

Glad to hear Miss Fisher will be back! I just love the chemistry between her and Jack. HOW can he resist her? Heck, I’d hit her, LOL!
