have you used any specific site to sell a used piece ? did it work for you? did you get a better price than Cabelas, Gander Mtn, etc. offered? was the price difference worth the extra effort ?
I generally sell through the classified section of specific forums. The S&W Forum, and Shotgun World. That way you have a feel for the buyer based on their posts in the general section.
I’ve seen some weirdness on Gun Broker, etc... Recently, on the Gun Runner site an obviously counterfeit Winchester 42 Trap got run up to over $10K. There was a guy called “Ed the Torch” who would do fake “case color hardening” on old side by sides with an acetylene torch.
As a seller, the best thing you can do is have high quality pictures, especially of any flaws on the gun, communicate promptly and clearly, and know the specifics of a gun if it is a collectible item.
I have used gunbroker to both buy and sell. Never a problem. Lets me search what is out there, price search.
I believe most of the sellers are reputable, but there’s also real ringers. Just have to do your homework.
I used Gunbroker to sell a match AR-15 after I got out of the service rifle match game. The buyer either was trying to go cheap by not including a FFL in the deal, or it was an attempted sting trying to get me to ship a rifle across state lines without going through an FFL. I made it clear that the rifle needed to go through an FFL, multiple times. Finally I got the FFL info and off it went. Know the law, I think those auction sites are a good place for a BATFE agent to hang out on and nail people for unintended violations.
I need to know! Because of severe Tinnitus, I no longer shoot, even with good hearing protection. I want to sell my SKB, Model 800, Trap gun. And, I’d rather sell it myself then to a dealer who wants to double his investment. But I sure could use the money!
I have not sold, but bought twice on Gunbroker. Both times were fine. Just have a local FFL do the transfer. They have ratings, kinda like ebay.
No problems with either Gunbroker or Guns America.
Ship to FFL and use postal money orders.
Very secure.
Look at sellers ratings and other adds. Any questions reply to me and I’ll answer you.
Purchased and sold over 100 firearms, only 1 issue. As a first time seller you’ll get hurt a little, but still do much better than selling to a pawn shop or gun store. Mind if I ask what you’re selling.
Probably.
I’ve bought some online. Never sold any.
Obamanomics has changed that.
Is it legal to sell to a local buyer face to face without an FFL?
Like I say, if they show me a permit to carry, I’m fine with that if they’re fine with me taking a pic of that and their DL (to cover my arse)
Customized Saiga 12.
I always lose mine in a river I canoe, often drunk. I haven’t bought any guns since Kennedy was shot and all the paperwork.
Not here but compliance is not that high.
Check your state laws, ask the buyer if he can legally own a gun, and let him cover up his drivers license number and take a picture of it. Of course a carry permit is good.
In most place FTF (face to face) is fine with no FFL in fact I strongly encourage it. ATF only has legal jurisdiction if either party has a FFL otherwise it is none of their business.
Wal-mart parking lot is usually a good place to meet. Lots of cameras with great resolution.
I think it depends on the state. I know it IS legal in Indiana to avoid an FFL as long as you aren’t selling across state line. I never sell, but I buy a lot. I’ve had a couple of guys ask me to sign a generic form stating that I am not a felon and that I am an Indiana resident. I would do the same if selling in person just to have it on record. You can always call the sheriff and ask just to keep yourself out of trouble, they are generally glad to answer questions like this.
Please pay know your local laws. What is fine in my state would get you jail in NJ.
