A Columbia University professor—who is an ardent supporter of women’s rights and advocate against domestic violence—was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor assault after beating up her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day.

According to her faculty bio on Columbia’s website, Joann Baney, 54, is the faculty director of the FDNY Officers Management Institute and also serves as faculty on the NYPD’s Police Management Institute. Both schools are part of Columbia’s Executive Education program under the business school.

"I hit him because he cheated on me."

The NY Daily News, which originally broke the story, reported that Baney trains New York City’s police officers and firefighters peacekeeping skills and “how to control heated situations.”

If you have been with someone long enough for you to be a couple you have made a commitment.
The two parties have given each other reason to depend on the other for certain societal obligations.

Fidelity is one of those obligations.

Failure to recognize that is a very good indication that the person is neither dating or marriage material.

assumptions are assumptions. No commitment makes everything a day by day relationship. No commitment, no societal obligation.

I’ll bet she’s going to appear, a little weepy, on the NFL’s domestic violence ads next month.

Your assumption that anything less then a ring and a certificate is not commitment is incorrect.

My statement, not assumption, that if you have been with someone long enough for you to be a couple you have made a commitment, is correct.

It is recognized as such by courts of law.

Of course I would see why some people have trouble with the concept. Illiteracy on the facts of social contracts is quite common these days.

It is one of the reasons there is so much conflict.

Playing house is only recognized in some states by some courts as a commitment. At best it is a quasi commitment in most areas. Assumptions are still assumptions. IMHO the government does not have to be the arbitrator but the social and culture does.

In the words of the incomparable Sam Kinnison, she now knows what turns Mr Hand into Mr. Fist.

If Boyfriend had stuck to Mr Hand they’d both be a lot happier.

Probably did 20 years and took a pension. Surprised he’s not a double-dipper.
