Postwar Rape: Were Americans As Bad as the Soviets? (German author/revisionism)
Der Spiegel ^ | March 02, 2015 – 06:36 PM | Klaus Wiegrefe

In the popular imagination, American GIs in postwar Germany were well-liked and well-behaved. But a new book claims that US soldiers raped up to 190,000 women at the end of World War II. Is there any truth to the controversial claim? […]

… German historian Miriam Gebhardt, well known in Germany for her book about leading feminist Alice Schwarzer and the feminist movement, has now published a new volume casting doubt on the accepted version of America’s role in German postwar history.

The work, which came out in German on Monday, takes a closer look at the rape of German women by all four victorious powers at the end of World War II. In particular, though, her views on the behavior of American GIs are likely to raise eyebrows. Gebhardt believes that members of the US military raped as many as 190,000 German women by the time West Germany regained sovereignty in 1955, with most of the assaults taking place in the months immediately following the US invasion of Nazi Germany.

The author bases her claims in large part on reports kept by Bavarian priests in the summer of 1945. The Archbishop of Munich and Freising had asked Catholic clergy to keep records on the allied advance and the Archdiocese published excerpts from its archive a few years ago. …

There are also claims by Japanese sources that GIs conducted mass rapes of Japanese women during the occupation after WWII. I've read some of the "accounts" and they appear to have been cooked up by rabid, anti-American Japanese eager to show how the Allies were just as bad as Japanese troops.

There's absolutely no corroboration about these supposed mass rapes. Some claims of incidents are so far-fetched, they're impossible to take seriously. One account had several truckloads of GIs stopping at a Japanese hospital and conducting a mass rape of all the Japanese women inside.

It's obvious that vicious, anti-American hatred drives these lying accounts.

Those claims of rampant rape are denial of reality. There was no need for rape. I know. Being there in the early 50’s working girls abounded offering their services for around 20 Marks ($5.) A carton of cigarettes got you a weekend with Inga. Occupation from 45 to the 50’s the devestation was so bad from satuation bombings people were living shells of houses the rates were even cheaper. For many it was the only way to survive. Several movies at the time were about the problems of fraterization.

Drivel gets so old after a time. The biggest problem is there is an infinite market for it in people like obama and Kerry.

All that is needed is to repeat it a few times, and GI's can join Kerry's club of torturing "raping" barbarians behaving like Genghis Khan.

While the rapes are indefensible, I’d imagine the Moroccans were using the same logic as Soviet rapists when Berlin fell; Italy had invaded France at the start of the war (while the Germans invaded from the north). Moroccan troops had a similar reputation in Spain’s civil war a few years earlier. They are Muslims, after all.

Actions have consequences.

American GIs who raped where, if caught, put on trial and if convicted, hanged. Soviet Troops where allowed, and even encouraged to rape German women in revenge for what their menfolk had done to the motherland. That is a very crucial difference.

Ever see the movie Two Women?

Moroccans raped over 60,000 Italian women within a 48 hour period during the war. It was in an area outside Rome. There’s a very sad and provocative statue to the women’s memory - Cicceria, I think it was.

Sorry, but I’ve seen that movie. The rapes were committed by North African troops, that is Arab Muslims. The scene you’re probably thinking of is afterwards when the mother screams at American troops passing by in trucks and pulls up her daughter’s skirt to show them what had been done. The US army prosecuted soldiers for rape and those are on the record, so it did occur, but it was the exception. With the Red Army in the eastern half of Germany it was the rule.

The Red Army soldiers also raped lots of non-German women in the lands they were supposedly liberating. One of the reasons Stalin turned against Tito was that he didn’t punish Milovan Djilas for complaining about the rapes and murders committed by Soviet troops in the brief period they were in Belgrade near the end of the war.

Gebhardt further assumes that on average, there are 100 incidents of rape for each birth.

So a feminist is saying that rapes almost never result in pregnancy? Didn't a Republican get in trouble with the press for assuming that?

It always is with Communists.

You’re right. The Red Army raped and mutilated over a million German women in Berlin, alone. I might be off on the numbers but it was atrocious.

The questions you must ask are how these numbers were derived. The only evidence cited in the Der Speigel article was in quotes from records maintained by Catholic priests. How do you extrapolate any number from a few diary entries? There is plenty of evidence for the crimes of the Soviet Army in eastern Germany and elsewhere in eastern Europe, as well as those committed by the Nazis, compiled from an abundance of records and first hand narratives conducted within a few years after the actual events, not 70 years later, when almost all the supposed victims and perpetrators are dead.

In bourgeois society, therefore, the past dominates the present; in Communist society, the present dominates the past. …
For communists, it’s doctrine.

Indeed. The Red Army also committed horrors against the Polish and Ukrainian women.
