Yup, Flatheads, also called opeluses, primarily will only bite on live bait. They are truly very good eating. Notice it does not have a split tail, it is an ancient breed.Check out my profile page, I know a thing or two about catfish and have read some mighty ignorant remarks on this thread.

it looks as if the photo was manipulated to make the fish look much bigger
That's my thought too....You got to figure that guy is around 200 lbs. himself and that fish is easily 4 or 5 times bigger.......

Catfish out of clean Clearwater lakes are very tasty, much better than farm raised.
Catfish are no more bottom feeders than trout are. Channel cats are often caught by walleye fishermen using artificial lures in the Great Lakes, spinners work especially well.

Channel cats will hit the same lures trout and walleyes do.

Channel cats will hit the same lures trout and walleyes do. I've caught channels on lures, too. But always when I was fishing for something else. But, if you're expressly fishing for channels, I can't imagine you'd do it with an artificial lure.

On the Great Lakes they fish for catfish either with live bait like minnows, or artificial lures like spinners.
