Mars One mission: 'My boyfriend is cool with me going to Mars on a one-way trip'

Earnshaw has a boyfriend, but says the relationship operates within “the understanding that for me the Mars Mission is what I want to do and if I do end up getting through to the final groups, then we’re going to go our separate ways and that’s something we’re both okay with”.

‘cool’? Her skills in language proves specs are low for this program’s candidates.

I know we are not supposed to be able to tell from appearance, but suffice it to say she doesn’t look like Mensa material. (And the Martians might just return her anyway)

I take my quick Uncomplimentary remarks back. I’ve decided to reserve whatever snide comments I can generate for deserving politicians. People who purposefully put thrmselves into the public eye. Young ladies with lover problems really deserve a little compassion not ridicule ( no matter how easy it may be). Now let’s see how long I can keep to this resolution ......smile smile smile. But anywhere there it be

Yeah I don’t see us colonizing mars till we can build really big ships in space that can be crewed by dozens or even hundreds of people. Larger crews mean less specialized cross training.

A support ship the size of an aircraft carrier could orbit as a small crew worked on the surface dropping supplies as needed.

Personally I think we should look at a permanent base on the moon first. The moon is easier to get to but is a considerably harsher environment which would be great for developing technology for use on mars.

NASA has already been provided a plan to get there and back but has chosen to ignore it for lack of pork.

If I was doing the picking, it would be 100% Leftists. They aren’t survive on Mars, and they can’t come back.

None of them deliberately set off on a suicide trip.

At that time, I suspect there were many people who would have disagreed with you............

All of the explorations of the past were considered suicidal and history is rife with such heroes who never returned. Many of whom never made it into your history book.

Percy Fawcett

George Bass

Sir John Franklin and Francis Crozier

Apollo 11 in 1969 could have met your criteria as being a suicide mission but fortunately it didn't and all went well.

This young lady is putting her life on the line and is willing to give it in order to advance science and humanity.

That's her choice and I salute her and hope all the best........

Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it’s cold as hell
And there’s no one there to raise them
If you did

I have a mother in law that can make the trip.

Just make sure it is one way.

she sounds like she’s the last person who would be able to survive the isolation and stresses of such a trip.

And notice it’s all about HER wishes and desires? How many other people would be willing to put up with that type of person for months or years?

And what exactly are her qualifications?

Apollo 11 in 1969 was intended to bring the astronauts home at end of mission. It was not even remotely a suicide mission.

These folks are literally signing up for a one-way flight.

To MARS.

You make some very good points. This is the ultimate teamwork scenario. Any self-centered motivations will be very detrimental. Hopefully it will come out during the training.

Wonder if her teammates will vote her off of the Living Unit?

self correction: I asked what are her qualifications, and she says she is studying for a PhD in astrophysics.

from wikipedia: Astrophysics (from Greek astron, ἄστρον "star", and physis, φύσις "nature") is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the universe, especially with "the nature of the heavenly bodies, rather than their positions or motions in space".[1][2] Among the objects studied are the Sun, other stars, galaxies, extrasolar planets, the interstellar medium and the cosmic microwave background.[3][4] Their emissions are examined across all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the properties examined include luminosity, density, temperature, and chemical composition. Because astrophysics is a very broad subject, astrophysicists typically apply many disciplines of physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and particle physics, and atomic and molecular physics.

that and a dollar will get you nowhere as a colonist.

Which means she will have to rely on the others to feed and care for her.
