Lady Gaga Pays Tribute to The Sound of Music's 50th Anniversary, and There's a Surprise Guest!

Well, the hills really were alive at the Oscars tonight.

Sorry, but we had to. Amazingly, this year marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, and the Oscars decided to pay tribute in a big way. Things kicked off with a speech by Scarlett Johansson in which she praised the film for its five academy awards (including Best Picture), and made a few "problem like Maria" jokes.

Then none other than Lady Gaga emerged onstage to sing a compilation of the movie's best songs. Rumors had been floating around that the singer was going to be paired with the tribute, and she even hinted at what was to come on the red carpet, telling E!'s Ryan Seacrest of her impending performance, "I really have put my heart into preparing for it."

Gaga went on to give a heartfelt performance of some of our favorite tunes from The Sound of Music, starting off with, naturally, "The Hills Are Alive," and then transitioning into "My Favorite Things" and "Edelweiss" before ending on a very high note with "Climb Every Mountain." It was certainly different than the Lady Gaga jams we know and love, but it was great to see her really show off her vocals. Clearly we're not alone in our admiration, as the singer got a major standing ovation from the audience.

And, of course, since this is Lady Gaga, she surprised us with a huge surprise guest: Fraulein Maria herself, Julie Andrews! The legendary actress appeared at the end of the performance to give Gaga a huge embrace, and then say a few words on her work in The Sound of Music before introducing the award for Best Original Score.

"Dear Lady Gaga, thank you for that wonderful tribute," said Andrews. "It really warmed my heart. It's hard to believe that 50 years have gone by since that joyous film was released. I blinked and then suddenly here I am. I think that I do speak for everyone connected with the movie when I say we all really felt blessed to have been a part of it. And as for me, well, how lucky can a girl get?"

You said it, Julie.

To commemorate her birthday , actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan 's Radio City Music Hall for a benefit.

One of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favorite Things' from the legendary movie 'Sound Of Music'.

Here are the lyrics she used:

(Sing It!) - If you sing it, its especially hysterical!!!

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines tied up in string, These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses, Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings, These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak, When the knees go bad, I simply remember my favorite things, And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions, No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions, Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring, These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin', Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin', And we won't mention our short shrunken frames, When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break, When the eyes grow dim,

Then I remember the great life I've had, And then I don't feel so bad.

Now that has class... I wonder if Gaga is getting tired of junk.

FROM THE AFP:

http://news.yahoo.com/lady-gaga-moving-sound-music-oscars-tribute-054051269.html

“In contrast to her own flamboyant concerts, Lady Gaga was all about the voice as she sang highlights from the beloved 1965 movie to the accompaniment of a string combo and a choir.”

Who woulda thunk?

I would have liked to have seen her in a Bratwurst Dress. LOL!

I didn’t watch the Oscars, but I am glad they recognized Julie Andrews.

One thing is for sure, Gaga has some pipes on her.

She makes Madonna sound like a screeching cat.

Those of us who either saw or heard her sing, aqua hair and all, with Tony Bennett were not at all surprised at the range and beauty of her voice....she stole the show from where I was sitting.

But she has one of the dumbest show business names that ive heard of: lady gaga.

She ought to change that to something normal.

Downright classy aside from the massive bugle tattoos on her arms.

I think Lady Gaga ( real name Stefani Germanotta) is trying to reinvent herself ( much like the aging Rod Stewart did before her ).

She’s probably trying to show off her artistic range... you know, to be a star for any age - not just one tied to the fickle nature of the charts of the hour.

Heck, with this number, she even belted to the sky mother superior’s operatic finale, “Climb Every Mountain.”

Her most recent hit recording for instance showcased her ability to sing and perform American Standards when she recorded a full album “CHEEK to CHEEK” with Tony Bennett.

Her last pop album flopped big time, she knows that part of her career is over. Wish Madonna would take the same lesson from her.

True. Maybe she will change it when she gets married.

I guess I was blessed. I wasn’t watching the oscars, but though, it’s 11:20, they should be to the winning film. Instead I was pleasantly surprised with the into of a singer I didn’t recognize beginning to sing “Sound of Music”. And then Julie Andrews appeared. And after the ‘best muscial score’ I turned off the tv.
