The Wachowskis’ Expensive ‘Jupiter Ascending': What The Hell Happened?
Deadline Hollywood ^ | February 9, 2015 | Anthony D'Alessandro

While this year’s domestic box office is off to a great start with $1.2B, it’s also produced too many bombs. Following Universal/Legendary’s Blackhat ($70M cost, $16.6M global B.O.) and Lionsgate’s Mortdecai ($60M cost, $19.1M global B.O.), this weekend brought Jupiter Ascending from Warner Bros./Village Roadshow (estimated cost $205-$210M) and Seventh Son (estimated cost $105M-$110M) from Universal/Legendary.

A studio would be crazy to give the siblings any more money.

I have a theory.

It was directed by the brother turned sister. In all seriousness, imagine you are an actor, photographer, etc. trying to work with this person. It’s like working with a person with a quarter sized mole right between their eyes. It’s really hard to focus on the task at hand.

I’m actually being serious.

There are far too many futurist/space movies out there. Its a completely worn-out category.

I believe movie budgets have a huge percentage of bogus expenses like illegal drugs expensed as catering. A crony capitalist small service company can turn insiders into multimillionaires with just a few bad movies.

My sister saw it this past weekend. She said a lot of the CG stuff was amazing, but the story, dialogue and acting were the worst.

This doesn’t surprise me. The two Matrix sequels these guys did were also awful. One trick ponies.

No wonder I hated Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer.

The only truly successful movie they’ve had is one using an allegedly stolen story. and when they tried to write their own sequels, only the brand recognition saved them.

Their special effects can be very impressive (though speed racer’s were hard to actually follow, kind of like the first Transformers movie), but we’re over that sort of thing as the reason to see a movie.

That said, I’ll pay a buck at Redbox to see it.

Jupiter Ascending is made for foreign audiences. The common complaint was for the longest that Americans are too obsessed with mindless action. Well apparently someone realized that Chinese and other asian audiences are much more obsessed with it. Plot driven storylines heavy on dialogue don’t translate well. But put Optimus Prime on a T-Rex and you’ll fill theaters up in Hong Kong.

I knew this film would be a mess just by watching the trailer. It had the opposite effect from what was intended, it made me not want to pay to see this.

They have said so themselves. However, before the bomb unfolded, they announced they had been paid by Netflix to create a big budget miniseries.

I really loath CGI.

I would rather watch Classic Trek than the new Abrams versions.

I would rather watch 1938 Snow White than anything current from Disney.

I would rather watch The Initial Star Wars than any of the sequels.

When those things were done by hand, they were an art form.

I know some artistic talent goes into CGI, but it just leaves me cold. I can’t get into it.

Maybe I’m just an old fart.

Jupiter Ascending’s trailer made it look like an action packed space “Twilight Saga”.

Too much CGI and a sappy teeny bopper lover story starring a very cute, talentless actress, directed by a gender confused person does not sound like a recipe for success to me.

Watching the preview did not inspire me to see it, and I am a long time fan of science fiction. I generally watch any science fiction, even *BAD* science fiction.

Mila Kunis as Galactic Princess or something? Pass.

The Show looked too melodramatic in every aspect.

Same here. The Trailer turned me off completely.
