Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 28, 2015-- Baedeker
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
Baedeker [bey-di-ker]or [bay-di-ker]
noun
1. Karl, 180159, German publisher, notably of guidebooks for travelers.
2. any of the series of guidebooks for travelers issued by the him or his successors.
3. any guidebook, pamphlet, or the like, containing information useful to travelers: a Baedeker to the restaurants of the region.
Origin: "travel guide," 1863, from German printer and bookseller Karl Baedeker (1801-1859) whose popular travel guides began the custom of rating places with one to four stars. The Baedeker raids by the Luftwaffe in April and May 1942 targeted British cultural and historical sites.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Thanks Perhaps it’s some Islamic custom to bow one final time before your spiritual mentors, which obviously was also more important.
Your snowfall total “corrections” reminded me of a recent conversation with my brother during our ‘Snow-vember’ event here, when he opened his garage door he was faced with a 6 foot wall of white, over which he could barely see. He came away from that event unscathed, yet this Monday with a dusting of snow but unseen ice, he slipped on his driveway knocking himself out for awhile and ended up in the ER with a concussion & paralysis on his left side, which is still bothering him. He does have some property on the Gulf Coast in Florida, which with everything going on now makes it even more tempting to relocate
When I was in the Air Force (1970-74,) I had the good fortune of being stationed at 2 Gulf Coast locations, Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS and Eglin, in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. The 4 years of no winters ended when I returned to the NYC metro area. I miss those mild winters.
NY Times today. Wow.
Seen this?
This woman wriggled her way from back of police car into the front and then led the cops on a 100 mph chase.
All with her hands cuffed behind her back. Steering with her knee.
Saw that last week, if course it would be Beaver co. Does that have the vid footage? They were talking about it on my drive time status this AM, cannot imagine how you do any of that handcuffed in back!
Yeah, they released the video yesterday.
